Stiebel Eltron Error Codes: Tempra Plus and DHC-E

Stiebel Eltron Error Codes: Tempra Plus and DHC-E
Short answer

Stiebel Eltron's US Tempra Plus manual lists error 2 for the inlet temperature sensor and 3 for the outlet sensor. The older DHC-E 20 and 30 manual lists electronic control module trouble as a possible cause for codes 91 through 97. Match the full model before interpreting a number or using a reset procedure.

Stiebel Eltron error codes need the model beside them: the US Tempra Plus manual gives 2 and 3 to temperature sensor faults. The older DHC-E 20 and DHC-E 30 manual lists an electronic control module problem as a possible cause for codes 91 through 97.

This guide covers those electric tankless models. It keeps their displays separate from the gas appliances in our tankless code guide and from Stiebel Eltron’s Accelera heat pump water heaters.

Before you start

What to carry: a torch, your model information and a phone or pen. Photograph the whole display, including the units and any wrench or lock symbol. Record whether the problem affects every hot tap or only one fixture.

Gas or electric? The Tempra and DHC-E manuals used here describe electric water heaters. A missing flame, pilot or gas supply is not the diagnostic route for these units.

Which DHC-E? The older chart below belongs specifically to DHC-E 20 and DHC-E 30. Do not carry it into a DHC-E Plus, Trend or Classic simply because the family letters match.

Renting? Send the model and display to the maintenance contact. Leave the casing in place while collecting those details.

These heaters can have more than one electrical supply.
Stiebel Eltron’s Tempra instructions require all circuit breakers and disconnect switches serving the heater turned off before installation, adjustment or service. They prohibit removing the cover with power present and require qualified service technicians.

The older DHC-E manual makes the multiple supply issue explicit: DHC-E 20 uses two independent circuits, and DHC-E 30 uses three. One breaker off is not a safe basis for opening either unit.

Stiebel Eltron warns that water above 125 degrees F can cause severe scalding. Do not raise the setting to work around a sensor error. Avoid testing hot water with bare skin when its temperature is uncertain.

After work that empties the water path, the Tempra startup instructions require the unit filled, air purged and the cover secured before its breakers are turned on. Let the person doing the work prepare the heater before turning its power back on.

How to read the Tempra Plus error menu

Stiebel Eltron says a wrench appears when the Tempra Plus encounters an error. Press the Information button while that symbol is showing to read the error page.

Use the wrench symbol to find the code

In the US Tempra Plus manual, a wrench at the lower left marks an error. With the wrench visible, press the Information button to advance to the error display. The manual’s illustration shows an E followed by 3.

Stiebel Eltron says holding Information for five seconds returns to the base display; the screen also returns after fifteen seconds without input. That is display navigation, not a statement that the fault has cleared.

On the ordinary Tempra Plus screen, the top number is the temperature setpoint, the bar shows the fraction of power capacity in use, and the bottom number is water flow.

Tempra Plus errors 2 and 3

These are the two entries in section 12.1 of the US Tempra Trend and Tempra Plus manual. The section is specifically titled for Tempra Plus error reporting.

Error Cause named by Stiebel Eltron Manual’s service direction
2 Inlet temperature sensor failure Contact technical support
3 Outlet temperature sensor failure Check the outlet sensor cable connection to the main control board and contact support
Check 2Sensor and connection diagnosis before replacement parts

Keep the inlet and outlet sensor reports distinct

For error 3, Stiebel Eltron includes a cable connection check. That belongs inside the service visit with the electrical supplies isolated, rather than an instruction for the owner to reach behind the front cover.

Give the technician the full number and mention any recent installation or service. Avoid reporting only a temperature problem, because the chart distinguishes which sensor circuit is involved. Neither entry tells the owner to descale the heater as the code remedy.

Tempra Plus error 2 names the inlet temperature sensor; error 3 names the outlet temperature sensor. This is a functional sketch, not a guide to opening or wiring the heater.

Report 91 through 97 as the manual groups them

The US DHC-E 20 and DHC-E 30 manual lists 91, 92, 93, 94, 95, 96 and 97 together. The table lists an electronic control module problem as a possible cause and directs you to contact Stiebel Eltron.

That table does not assign a different component to each number. Keep the exact number for support, but do not turn 91 into an inlet sensor diagnosis by borrowing from another Stiebel Eltron model.

The same manual says that, apart from its filter screen, the DHC-E has no parts serviceable by an untrained person. It asks owners to contact support before removing a heater from the wall, so a code alone is not a reason to disconnect and replace the whole unit.

Separate a display setting from a flow complaint

On Tempra Plus, Stiebel Eltron describes the lock symbol as a display setting that prevents changes. Its maximum temperature setting can also limit the setpoint. These are different from the wrench that opens the error menu.

On the older DHC-E 20 and 30, Stiebel Eltron says a flashing Power light during operation means water flow exceeds the unit’s heating capacity. Its direction is to reduce the hot water flow so the unit can reach the setpoint. That light is not one of the numbered electronic faults.

For a Tempra with no hot water, the maker’s troubleshooting table includes power, insufficient flow, the flow sensor and incorrect plumbing. For restricted hot flow, it lists a clogged screen or scale. Tell service which symptom you have rather than calling every case a sensor failure.

The broader tankless water heater problems guide explains flow complaints. Use the electric model’s own maintenance instructions for any work at this heater.

A thermal cutout reset is separate from the menu

Stiebel Eltron says the Tempra thermal cutouts stop power to the elements when water temperature is too high. These are internal manual reset devices, not the front Information button.

Its reset section again requires complete electrical isolation. A canister that repeatedly needs resetting may have a technical problem requiring Stiebel Eltron support. Leave that investigation to service instead of treating the reset as a routine way to restore hot water.

What each one takes

Finding Work involved
Tempra Plus 2 or 3 Sensor diagnosis, including the specified outlet cable check for 3
DHC-E 20 or 30 showing 91 to 97 Technical support to check a possible electronic control module problem
Display lock or maximum setting Checking the intended control settings
No code and reduced hot flow Separating fixture restriction from heater screen or scale problems
Repeated thermal cutout trip Electrical isolation and a service investigation

Questions people ask

Where are the Stiebel Eltron tankless code PDFs?

The Tempra Trend and Plus manual gives the Plus error menu on page 9 and codes on page 14. The older DHC-E 20 and 30 manual has its grouped fault chart on page 8.

What about error 8 or error 32?

Those numbers appear in Stiebel Eltron’s Accelera 220 E and 300 E manual for heat pump water heaters with tanks. They are not entries in the Tempra Plus table used here. Check the full appliance name before following an 8 or 32 remedy.

Does a Tempra Trend use this Plus error menu?

The shared manual gives Trend and Plus separate display sections. Its error menu and numeric sensor chart are labeled Tempra Plus, so this guide does not extend them to Trend.

Is an information page such as I1 a fault?

Stiebel Eltron calls I1 the accumulated savings display on Tempra Plus. Follow the wrench to the error page instead of treating every letter and number in the information menu as an error.

Should I replace the whole heater for error 3?

The Tempra Plus chart first includes the outlet sensor’s cable connection and directs you to technical support. It does not say error 3 requires a replacement water heater.

The other hot water guides: Eemax LavAdvantage codes, EcoSmart electric tankless codes, sediment symptoms and a water heater with no hot water.
