Bradford White Tankless Error Codes: Infiniti 10, 11, 45
Bradford White's Infiniti GS and GR tankless heaters flash Er and a number on the display. Its manuals list 10 as the flame lost eight times and 11 as ignition failing ten times (fourteen on the RTGS150), both hard locks cleared with the Power button. A soft lock resets itself when the issue subsides. 45 is water leak detection: the heater closes its own inlet valve.
Bradford White tankless error codes on the Infiniti GS and GR, its wall mounted condensing tankless heaters, flash on the display as Er and a two digit number. Bradford White marks every code in its table as a hard lock, which needs a manual reset, or a soft lock, which resets itself when the issue subsides.
Codes 10 and 11 are both flame faults and both hard locks. Everything below comes from Bradford White’s installation and operation instructions for the Infiniti GS Series and the Infiniti GR Series, which has a built in recirculation pump.
Before you start
What to carry: a torch, a pen, and paper for the code. Nothing inside the cabinet needs opening for the checks here: Bradford White says not to take the heater apart, and to call a local qualified technician for a repair.
Gas or electric? Gas. The GS and GR burn natural gas or propane and need 120V power to run.
Is it a GS or a GR? The model is on the heater’s rating plate: RTGS199 or RTGS150 for the GS, RTGR199 or RTGR150 for the GR (this guide uses the RTGR199 manual). Older Infiniti models and the K and L Series have their own manuals.
Renting? Send the code, the model and whether you have any hot water to whoever arranges repairs.
What Bradford White says to do: do not try to light any appliance, do not touch any electrical switch, and do not use any phone in your building. Call your gas supplier at once from a nearby phone and follow its instructions, or the fire department if you cannot reach the supplier.
Code 40 is gas leakage detected. Bradford White’s entry for it starts: if you smell gas, stop, follow those instructions and call a qualified service technician or the fuel gas utility.
Been under water? Do not use the heater if any part has been under water. Bradford White says to call a qualified technician at once to inspect it and replace any part of the control system and any gas control that may have been under water.
Never wipe it wet. Bradford White says not to wipe the heater or its display panel with a wet cloth, or internal parts may fail.
Hard lock or soft lock
Bradford White’s table gives a lockout type beside each code. Its own definition: a hard lock requires a manual reset, and a soft lock resets itself when the issue subsides. For most hard locks, the remedy starts with pressing the Power button to clear the error code.
Selected rows from the table for the Infiniti GS RTGS199:
| Code | What Bradford White’s table says | Lock |
|---|---|---|
| 10 | Flame has been lost 8 (eight) times | Hard |
| 11 | Ignition has failed 10 (ten) times | Hard |
| 16 | Operating temperature sensor or DHW sensor detects water temperature greater than 199°F (93°C) | Hard |
| 20 | High limit overheat switch: closed is normal, open is fault | Hard |
| 29 | Condensate trap blocked | Hard |
| 31 / 32 | Inlet water sensor / DHW sensor open or short | Soft |
| 40 | Gas leakage detected in 10 minutes, or three times within one hour | Hard |
| 41 | Fan speed too high with flame on | Hard |
| 42 | APS: closed is normal, open is fault | Hard |
| 43 | Burner overheat switch open | Hard |
| 45 | Water leak detection | Hard |
| 65 / 66 | Flow control valve error / mixing valve error | Hard |
| 72 | Flame signal detected before ignition | Soft |
| 76 | Poor communication | Soft |
| 94 | Exhaust temperature greater than 149°F (65°C), 195°F (90°C) in commercial mode | Hard |
The smaller RTGS150 has its own manual, and its table gives 11 as ignition failing 14 (fourteen) times and does not list 42 or 43. The GR manual lists the RTGS199’s codes and adds its own for the recirculation pump: 44, possible pump failure, and 46, low recirculation flow.
What you can check
Write the code down, and whether it is hard or soft
Write down the number after Er and find it in the table. If it is a soft lock, Bradford White says it resets itself when the issue subsides, so note whether it clears and whether it comes back.
With 10 or 11, press the Power button once
For both, the first step in Bradford White’s table is to press the Power button to clear the error code. If the error happens again, its next checks are the gas pressure, the gas valve wire, the flame detection sensor, the ignition transformer and the spark igniter. Those are for a qualified technician, so call one rather than clearing it again and again.
With 45, find where the water is coming from
Bradford White says that when 45 appears, the heater closes its own cold inlet water valve (the flow control valve, in the GR manual) to stop more leakage. The leak sensor is at the bottom left of the cabinet, and its remedy is to clean water from that area and find the source.
That source can be condensation from cold surfaces in humid conditions, Bradford White notes, especially when no other source can be found. From outside the heater, look at the pipes and fittings above and around it for drips. Since Bradford White says not to take the heater apart, leave the cabinet to a technician.
With 29, 41 or 42, look at the vent and the condensate line
Bradford White’s remedies for all three include checks outside the cabinet. For 29, condensate trap blocked, it says to check the condensate line and its termination for blockages and the exhaust vent for blockage. For 41, it says to check the vent connections, and for 42, after its APS checks, the exhaust vent.
Look at where the vent ends outside and at the end of the condensate line for anything blocking them. If the vent piping shows leakage or damage, or flue gas keeps escaping from the end of the condensate tubing, Bradford White says to call a qualified service technician at once. Bradford White also says not to hang clothes on the exhaust stack, as this may start a fire. It says to clean the air intake filter every 3 months, with the heater turned off at the Power button.
With 46 on a GR, or water not hot enough, check the cold water inlet filter
For 46, low recirculation flow, the GR table’s first step is to check the return and cold water filters. Bradford White’s troubleshooting chart also points to a clogged cold water inlet filter when the water is not hot enough.
Its maintenance section gives these steps for the inlet filter:
- Put a bucket under the heater for the water left inside.
- Turn the heater off at the Power button, then turn off the gas valve.
- Close the cold water supply valve to the heater, or the main water valve if there is none.
- Open the hot water taps fully.
- Remove the cold water inlet filter and clean it with a toothbrush and clean running water.
To refill, Bradford White says to follow the steps in reverse.
Leaving it in winter
Bradford White says not to disconnect the main power and not to shut the heater off when you leave home for extended periods, because it has a freeze protection function. For an extended vacation or a seasonal home, it says not to shut the heater down unless it is fully drained of all water, to prevent damage from freezing.
What each one takes
| What you see | What the work involves |
|---|---|
| A hard lock that clears and stays clear | Nothing more; note the code in case it returns |
| 10 or 11 coming back | A technician for the gas pressure, flame sensor or igniter |
| 45 | Finding the water; a technician for anything inside the cabinet |
| 29, 41 or 42 | A look at the vent and condensate line; a technician if they are clear |
| 46, or water not hot enough | Cleaning the cold water inlet filter |
| 40, or any smell of gas | The gas supplier’s instructions first, then a technician |
Questions people ask
What does error code 11 mean on a Bradford White tankless?
On the Infiniti GS RTGS199 and the GR, ignition has failed ten times; on the RTGS150, Bradford White’s table says fourteen. It is a hard lock: press the Power button to clear it, and call a technician if it comes back.
What does error code 10 mean on a Bradford White tankless?
The flame has been lost eight times. It is a hard lock cleared with the Power button. If it returns, Bradford White’s checks include the gas pressure and the flame detection sensor, which are technician work.
How do I reset a Bradford White Infiniti tankless?
For most hard locks, Bradford White’s table says to press the Power button to clear the error code. A soft lock resets itself when the issue subsides.
Why did my Bradford White tankless shut off the water?
On the Infiniti GS and GR, code 45 is water leak detection: the heater closes a valve to prevent more leakage (the cold inlet water valve on the GS, the flow control valve in the GR manual). Find the source of the water before it runs again.
Do these codes apply to my Bradford White tank water heater?
No. A Bradford White tank heater has its own codes, covered in Bradford White water heater codes.
