American Standard Water Heater Codes: Flashes and Numbers
Short answer

American Standard water heater error codes depend on the heater. The gas Power Vent flashes a light on its gas control: four flashes is the ECO over-temperature limit, six-one a failed ignition lockout. The hybrid heat pump and the Demand Response electric heater show numbers, such as 042 for an obstructed evaporator on the hybrid or 232 for overheating on the Demand Response heater.

American Standard water heater error codes come in two kinds in its manuals. The gas Power Vent flashes a light on its gas control valve, in counts such as four flashes or six-one. The hybrid heat pump and the Demand Response electric heater show three digit numbers on a display, such as 042 or 232.

The same number can mean different things on the two displays, so read the chart for your heater. Everything below comes from American Standard’s own manuals, on americanstandardwaterheaters.com.

Before you start

What to carry: a torch, and the model and serial number from the rating plate on the heater’s jacket, which American Standard asks for when you call.

Which heater is it? A Power Vent burns gas and has a status light on its gas control. The hybrid heat pump has a display with touch buttons and an air filter to clean. The Demand Response electric heater has a display and heating elements, with no heat pump.

Is it a fault? On the Power Vent, a short flash once every four seconds means idle, and a “heartbeat” of bright and dim means a call for heat. On the hybrid, at installation, if the inlet and tank water are below 49°F, the elements heat the water until both sensors reach 49°F, and then the heat pump starts.

Gas smell, overheating and flooding come first.
If you smell gas: do not try to light any appliance, do not touch any electrical switch and do not use any phone in your building. Get everyone out of the building, call your gas supplier from a neighbor’s phone and follow its instructions, and if you cannot reach them, call the fire department. Do not go back into the building; if help is coming, wait for it outside.

Too hot on a Power Vent: American Standard says that if a high temperature condition occurs, turn the main gas supply off and have the water heater repaired by a qualified service technician.

Seven flashes on a Power Vent: the flammable vapor sensor has detected flammable vapors. American Standard says to check that no vapors of gasoline, paint or any possible gas leak are present, and to contact technical support.

After a flood: do not use the heater if any part has been under water. Call a qualified service technician at once.

Unused for two weeks or more: hydrogen gas can build up in the hot water system, and it is extremely flammable. American Standard says to open the kitchen sink hot water faucet for several minutes before using any electrical appliance connected to the hot water system, with no smoking or open flame near it.

Electric heaters: turn off the electrical supply before servicing the Demand Response heater. If it gets too hot, American Standard says a qualified service technician must investigate the cause and correct it before the heater goes back into service.

Power Vent: the light on the gas control

The gas control has an LED that is active when the gas valve is in operation. American Standard says a code such as six-two means six bright flashes, a one second pause, two more bright flashes, then a three second pause before it repeats.

Flashes What American Standard says
Short flash every 4 seconds Idle: no call for heat, no fault
“Heartbeat”, bright and dim Call for heat, no fault
1 Low flame signal; the control keeps operating
2 Pressure switch failed closed
3 Pressure switch failed open
4 ECO (Energy Cut Off) limit lockout: the temperature limit was exceeded
5 Flame out of sequence
6-1 Soft lockout: retry limit, failed trial for ignition
6-2 Soft lockout: recycle limit, pressure switch or high limit opened
6-3 Soft lockout: recycle limit, flame lost
6-4 Soft lockout: sensed flame out of sequence
7 Flammable vapor sensor lockout (newer Power Vent manual)
8-1 Flammable vapor sensor fault (newer Power Vent manual)
8-2, 8-3, 8-4 Temperature sensor fault, electronics fault, valve fault
READING A SIX-TWO FLASH CODE The status light on the Power Vent's gas control, read left to right A B C D A Six bright flashes C Two more bright flashes B A one second pause D A three second pause, then it repeats Not a fault: a short flash once every four seconds means idle, and a bright and dim heartbeat means a call for heat.
How to read a Power Vent flash code, from American Standard's manual, using six-two as the example. A: six bright flashes. B: a one second pause. C: two more bright flashes. D: a three second pause, then the six-two repeats. A short flash every four seconds means idle, and a bright and dim heartbeat a call for heat.

Hybrid heat pump and Demand Response: the numbers

On the hybrid heat pump, American Standard’s table also says whether the heating element and the heat pump still run. Where its table lists the element on and the heat pump off, the heater keeps supplying hot water with the element alone.

Code Hybrid heat pump Element, heat pump
007, 008, 009, 010, 012 A heat pump temperature sensor (NTC) is open or short circuit On, off
021 Gas leak (refrigerant) On, off
032, 044 Compressor issue, fan issue On, off
042 Evaporator obstructed On, off
048, 051 High pressure, pressure switch On, off
218 Dome (hot water) sensor open or short circuit On, off
230 Water temperature sensor in the element zone open or short circuit Off, off
231, 232 Water temperature sensor safety intervention, first and second level Off, off
233 Relay blocked Off, off
241 Impressed current anode open circuit Off, off
243 Water leakage detected Off, off
321, 331, 332 Corrupted data; no communication between the main board and the display Off, off
333, 336, 338 Wi-Fi board, touch screen, CTA2045 module On, on

The Demand Response electric heater uses some of the same numbers for other faults. American Standard lists 218 as the upper sensor and 230 as the bottom sensor or the mechanical safety device. On it, 231 is dry heating and 232 is overheating. 321 is corrupted data, 331 and 332 a lost link between the main board and the display, and 336 a touch screen that is not working. In a lockout, the service icon blinks along with the code.

What you can check

Check 1Free, ten seconds

Power Vent six flashes: reset the gas control

American Standard says soft lockouts need the gas control reset: slide the ON/OFF switch to OFF, wait 10 seconds, and slide it back to ON. A soft lockout happens when a safety device trips, and the control retries on a timed basis, but it will not run again until the failure is corrected.

If the cause has not been corrected, the control will stay in lockout or go back into it. Its corrective actions for those codes are a technician’s: the blower, the air pressure switch and its tubes, the vent and intake pipes, the gas pressure, the flame sensor and the hot surface igniter. A hard lockout means the main controller has failed and must be replaced.

Check 2Free to do; a technician for the gas control

Power Vent four flashes: gas off, call for service

Four flashes is the ECO, the Energy Cut Off that shuts off the gas when the water gets too hot. The manual is plain: if a high temperature condition occurs, turn the main gas supply off and have the heater repaired by a qualified service technician. Its operating section adds that if the light blinks four times, the owner should call the service number on the front of the manual.

The technician’s section adds its own steps: a set point knob reset that can only be done twice, after which a third trip puts the gas valve into a hard lockout and the gas control has to be replaced. The same manual also says to replace the gas control if the four flashes are still there after a restart, so leave this one to the technician.

Check 3Free, water and mild soap

Hybrid 042: clean the filter and clear the airflow

For 042, Evaporator Obstructed, American Standard says to turn off the appliance, then check that the evaporator, the enclosure grill and the air filter are not obstructed. Before this or any maintenance, it says to disconnect the electrical supply, to avoid electric shock, and let the heater cool, to avoid severe burns. It recommends cleaning the filter at least once a year: the filter comes out with the clip above the casings, and you clean it with water and mild soap.

While you are there, check that the air exhaust duct and its outside end are not blocked or damaged, and that the condensate runs to a drain. If the condensate hose clogs, water spills down the outside of the unit, so clear any debris in the drain lines.

WHAT YOU CAN CHECK ON THE HYBRID

A B C D

A The display the code shows here; the ON/OFF button resets it

B The air filter power off; water and mild soap, at least once a year

C Evaporator and grills must not be obstructed (042)

D Condensate drain hose must run to a drain and not clog

What an owner can check on the hybrid heat pump, drawn as a plain heat pump water heater, not the real cabinet. A: the display, where the code shows and the ON/OFF button resets it. B: the air filter, cleaned with water and mild soap at least once a year. C: the evaporator and grills, which must not be obstructed (code 042). D: the condensate drain hose, which must run to a drain and not clog.

Hybrid or Demand Response: reset with the ON/OFF button

On the hybrid, American Standard’s reset for the errors is to switch the product off and on within 10 seconds, using the ON/OFF button. For 233, 321, 331, 332 and 336, its table says to reset by pressing the ON/OFF button twice, and if the error persists, it names a part to replace, which is a technician’s job.

On the Demand Response heater, the reset for 231, 232, 321, 331, 332 and 336 is pushing the ON/OFF button twice, and for 231, 232 and 321 American Standard adds: do not remove the power from the house switch. For the sensor codes, 218 and 230, its steps are checks of the sensor wiring on the main board, which belong to a technician with the power off.

Hybrid: the element runs almost all the time

American Standard lists a reason that is not a fault: the heat pump runs less and the element almost all the time if 8 days have not passed since the first start-up, a change to its Time W setting, or a power failure. Its step is to wait 8 days. Its other causes are a low supply voltage, an evaporator that is dirty or frozen, and problems in the heat pump circuit, for which its step is to check the display for error messages.

What each one takes

What you see What the work involves
Power Vent short flash or heartbeat Nothing; normal operation

Power Vent 2, 3, 5, 8-2 to 8-4 A technician for the pressure switch, flame, sensor or control
Hybrid 042 Cleaning the filter and grills, clearing the drain
Hybrid 007 to 051, other than 042 A technician; the element keeps heating meanwhile
Hybrid or Demand Response 321, 331, 332, 336 The ON/OFF reset; a technician if it persists

Questions people ask

What do 4 flashes mean on an American Standard water heater?

On the Power Vent, four flashes is the ECO (Energy Cut Off) limit lockout: the water got too hot and the burner was shut off. American Standard says to turn the main gas supply off and have it repaired by a qualified service technician.

How do I reset an American Standard water heater?

On the Power Vent, slide the ON/OFF switch on the gas control to OFF, wait 10 seconds and slide it back to ON. On the hybrid and the Demand Response heater, use the ON/OFF button on the display. If the cause has not been corrected, the Power Vent will stay in lockout or go back into it; on the other two, an error that persists after the reset needs a technician.

What does error 042 mean on an American Standard heat pump water heater?

Evaporator Obstructed. Turn the heater off and check the evaporator, the grill and the air filter. American Standard says to clean the filter with water and mild soap at least once a year.

What does 232 mean on an American Standard water heater?

On the Demand Response electric heater, overheating; American Standard’s reset is pushing the ON/OFF button twice. On the hybrid heat pump, 232 is a second level safety intervention of the water temperature sensor in the element zone, and its step is checking the sensor.

Why does my American Standard Power Vent light flash once every few seconds?

A short flash once every four seconds means idle, with no call for heat and no fault. A bright and dim heartbeat means it is heating.
