Honeywell Thermostat Error Codes: 171, E02 and E1 33
Short answer

Resideo's manuals give different answers for different Honeywell thermostats. On the T6 Pro Smart, 171 asks for the date and time. On the RTH6500WF, E02 means an invalid WiFi password. On a FocusPRO wireless system with an equipment interface module, E1 33 points to return air sensor wiring.

Honeywell thermostat error codes need a model name beside them before they give you a useful answer. Resideo’s T6 Pro Smart manual calls 171 a request to set the clock, while its RTH6500WF guide calls E02 an invalid WiFi password.

Start with the complete message on your screen. This page covers those two families and the FocusPRO wireless system that can show E1 with a second number. If there is no code, use the Honeywell thermostat checks for a blank or unresponsive screen.

Before you start

What to carry: a phone for the display, a pen and a torch for a dim hallway. Have your home WiFi password handy if the message appeared during network setup.

Gas or electric? Choose the table by the thermostat model, rather than the fuel your heating uses. Find the model in your paperwork first, then match it to the list below.

Renting? Send the landlord or manager the model, the full message and whether the heating still works before arranging equipment repairs.

Stay out of the wiring and installer tests. Resideo’s FocusPRO installation guide requires a trained, experienced technician and warns to disconnect power before installation work. Its system tests bypass compressor protection. Leave wiring, equipment module resets and installer tests to the person servicing the system.

For the RTH6500WF, Resideo’s installation instructions say to switch heating and cooling power off at the breaker or system switch before removing the old thermostat. Use that power precaution if you need to expose the wall plate to identify yours, and leave the connected wires alone.

Match the code to the thermostat

Three examples from Resideo's manuals. Match the model as well as the characters on the screen; these are simplified displays.
Model covered here Where to start
T6 Pro Smart TH6320WF2003 or TH6220WF2006 Three digit alerts such as 171. Use the T6 sections below.
FocusPRO wireless TH6320R1004 or TH5320R1002 with an equipment interface module E1 or E with a number on the right. Use the FocusPRO section, including E1 33.
RTH6500WF Smart Series RTH6580WF1001 or RTH6585R1006 Codes such as E02 and E42. Use the RTH6500WF section.

On the T6 Pro Smart, Resideo says to touch Menu, open ALERTS and touch Select to see the number and scrolling description. Use the arrows to see any other active alerts. The ALERTS menu appears only when an alert is active.

On the FocusPRO wireless system, Resideo says the number to the right of E1 or E identifies the fault. Record both parts. On the RTH6500WF, its guide says an error eventually alternates with the clock, so watch the display long enough to catch it.

T6 Pro Smart: 171 and the other numbered alerts

Check 1A settings change, with no parts to buy

For 171, set the date as well as the time

Resideo lists 171 as a request for the date and time so features such as the schedule can operate. For a T6 Pro Smart that is not connected to WiFi, its guide gives these steps:

  1. Touch Menu, use the arrows to find CLOCK, then touch Select.
  2. Find SET TIME and touch Select. Adjust the time with the plus or minus button and touch Done.
  3. Return to Menu, find DATE and touch Select.
  4. Set the month and confirm with Select. Set the day and year the same way, using Select to save.

Resideo says a T6 Pro Smart connected to WiFi and registered to the Resideo App sets its date and time automatically. On that setup, CLOCK and DATE are absent from the menu. If yours is connected and registered but still shows 171, give support that detail rather than hunting for a missing button.

Check 2A maintenance task or a service visit, depending on the alert

Separate a service alert from a maintenance reminder

For the two T6 Pro Smart models above, Resideo’s alert table makes these distinctions:

Code What Resideo identifies What to do
164 The heat pump needs service Arrange heat pump diagnosis and service
168 The WiFi radio module is not operating Service assistance; wireless features are unavailable
170 An internal memory error Service assistance
173 An error in the thermostat’s own temperature sensor Service assistance
177 The wired indoor temperature sensor is not connected, or there is a wiring short Service assistance with the sensor circuit
178 The wired outdoor temperature sensor is not connected, or there is a wiring short Service assistance with the sensor circuit
181 or 182 Air filter replacement reminder, filter 1 or 2 Replace the filter or arrange service, then touch Dismiss to reset its timer
184 Humidifier pad replacement reminder Replace the pad or arrange service, then dismiss the reminder
185 Dehumidifier filter replacement reminder Replace the filter or arrange service, then dismiss the reminder

Resideo says some critical alerts cannot be dismissed or snoozed. A missing Dismiss button is not a reason to erase the thermostat setup.

FocusPRO wireless: what E1 33 means

FOCUSPRO WITH A DUCT SENSOR: E1 33 Return air duct A B Equipment module C E1 33 Thermostat Wireless A Return air sensor In the return air duct. Keep it in place. B Sensor wiring Code 33 directs the installer to check this circuit. C Equipment interface module Near or on the HVAC equipment. Leave resets to the installer. Based on Resideo 69-2091EFS. Location sketch only, not terminal wiring.
A ducted FocusPRO system fitted with the optional return air sensor, from Resideo's guide. Code 33 directs the installer to its wiring. This is a location sketch, not a wiring diagram.
Check 3An installer visit; the repair depends on what the inspection finds

Have the return air sensor circuit checked

For a FocusPRO wireless thermostat used with an equipment interface module, Resideo’s code 33 instruction is to check the return air sensor wiring. In Resideo’s layout, the module, called the EIM, sits near or on the heating and cooling equipment.

Resideo gives a procedure to clear E1 33 if the return air sensor is being removed permanently. It then directs the installer to reconnect the wireless devices. That is a system change, not an everyday way to clear a warning.

Resideo describes this optional sensor as backup control if thermostat power is lost. For hydronic heating, its guide instead specifies a remote indoor sensor in the living space. Keep the sensor in place and give the installer the full code.

Other codes in the same FocusPRO installation guide point elsewhere:

  • 29: the wireless devices being connected are incompatible.
  • 30: an invalid zone number; this EIM setup requires zero.
  • 34: low wireless signal strength.
  • 38: the installer must check that the EIM’s Connected light is flashing and that they are at least two feet away from the EIM.
  • 53: the thermostat is not receiving outdoor temperature and humidity information.

For 53, Resideo lists either a configuration needing an outdoor sensor that has not been connected, or a sensor that may no longer be communicating. Have the installer distinguish those cases before changing equipment settings.

RTH6500WF: E02, E42 and the WiFi codes

Check 4Network setup first; E42 includes a specified wait

Use the network fix for the code you have

On the RTH6500WF models named above, Resideo gives this list. These meanings belong to that series, even if another Honeywell thermostat shows similar characters.

Code Resideo’s meaning Next step from its guide
E01 The router lost power during WiFi setup Check that the router has power and is working
E02 Invalid WiFi password Repeat WiFi setup with the correct home network password
E42 The router has not assigned the thermostat an IP address Wait 30 minutes; if still disconnected, use the restart below and check that the router assigns addresses automatically
E43 No internet connection to Total Connect Comfort Check the internet cable connection and reboot the router
E99 A general error Use the restart below

For E42 after that wait, or E99, Resideo specifies removing the thermostat from its wall plate for ten seconds, then reconnecting it. Keep the wall plate and its wires attached. This is the restart given for those RTH6500WF codes, not a reset recipe for every Honeywell model.

For a T6 Pro Smart instead, Resideo calls 399 lost internet and 400 lost WiFi signal. For 399, check network settings; for 400, wait for reconnection or select a new WiFi network. These are separate from its 168 radio fault in the earlier table.

After you have dealt with the code

Check 5Observation first; equipment diagnosis if the fault remains

Check what the heating or cooling is doing

Resideo says the RTH6500WF can operate heating and cooling with or without WiFi. If its network code clears but the house still gets no heat, move to the thermostat and equipment checks rather than repeating network setup.

For a service visit, pass on whether the code began after installation, a router change or a power loss. Include the model and message you recorded at the start. That gives the technician a clear starting point without changing the system before they arrive.

If you are considering erasing settings, the guide to thermostat restarts and resets explains the different choices.

What each one takes

What the code leads to The work involved
A clock or network setting Work at the screen or router, with no replacement part specified
A maintenance reminder The filter or other maintenance item, plus the work to replace it
A sensor, memory or radio fault A service assessment before deciding what needs repair or replacement
FocusPRO return air sensor code An installer checking the sensor circuit and the system configuration

Questions people ask

Does T6 code 175 mean my air conditioner has failed?

No. Resideo calls 175 AC Power Resumed: electrical power to the thermostat has returned after a loss. Its table says no action is needed for that alert.

Why does E02 disappear before I fix the password?

Resideo says the RTH6500WF displays E02 for 30 seconds and then returns to WiFi Setup mode. That change is part of the setup process.

What are T6 Pro Smart codes 210 and 388?

Resideo lists registration in the Resideo App for both. Code 210 concerns outdoor temperature information, which the installation settings may require for correct operation. Code 388 concerns remote access and outdoor temperature information.

What does T6 Pro Smart code 508 ask me to do?

Resideo identifies 508 as WiFi not configured and directs you to connect through the Resideo App. It is a setup request.

Can I use this list for a T5, VisionPRO or Prestige?

This guide does not cover those families or every T6 variant. Give Honeywell Home support the exact model and message if yours is outside the list.
