Ecobee Error Messages: Alerts, Aux Heat and Calibration
Short answer

Read the words of the message first. ecobee separates maintenance reminders from equipment alerts. An auxiliary heat warning reports usage against an alert setting; a heating or cooling failure needs a different response. Error 10 and error 12 appear in ecobee's doorbell documentation, while E298 belongs to Google Nest.

Ecobee error messages are easier to sort when you start with the whole message rather than a number from a search result. In its thermostat guide, ecobee separates reminders about maintenance from alerts about how the equipment is performing. They need different responses.

A filter reminder, an auxiliary heat warning and a house that keeps getting colder should not all send you looking for a reset button. Find your message below, then follow the section that fits.

Before you start

What to carry: your phone to photograph the message, and the thermostat’s model name. Keep the full wording, including whether it appeared on the thermostat, in the app or in an email.

Gas or electric? Check your installation paperwork for the equipment type. The auxiliary heat sections below concern a heat pump with a second heat source, which ecobee describes as helping the heat pump warm the home.

Renting? Send the message and the current room temperature to whoever arranges your heating repairs. That gives them something more useful than “the thermostat has an error.”

Keep alert settings separate from equipment settings. ecobee’s threshold guidance recommends contacting its support team before changing thresholds if you do not know your equipment’s capabilities. A setting that controls when heat can run deserves more care than a notification preference.

If the investigation reaches wiring, ecobee’s Premium installation guide requires system power to be off before adjusting it. The checks here start at the screen.

A reminder, an auxiliary heat alert and a failure to heat describe different things. These are categories, not copies of the thermostat screen.
Check 1

Separate a maintenance reminder from an equipment alert

Service, filter or UV lamp. ecobee’s Premium guide describes these as maintenance reminders with a date and an interval you can set. For a filter reminder, check when the filter was actually changed before treating the message as a new breakdown.

Auxiliary heat. ecobee’s alert settings distinguish time spent using auxiliary heat from using it above a chosen outdoor temperature. Both are covered in the next section.

Failed heating or cooling. ecobee describes these as alerts that the system failed to heat or cool. If that matches what is happening in the house, use the equipment checks linked below.

If you only have a number, the questions at the end explain error 10, error 12 and E298. Match the device before following a code’s repair instructions.

The auxiliary heat warning

Check 2

Match the warning to the right setting

Aux Heat Runtime Alert. ecobee defines this as auxiliary heat running longer than the time you set for that alert. Read it as a usage warning, not a diagnosis of a broken compressor.

Aux Outdoor Temp Alert. ecobee says this appears when auxiliary heat is requested above the outdoor temperature chosen for that alert. The important comparison is with that alert’s setting, not simply whether it feels cold outside.

Start by opening the alert preferences and checking which limit the message concerns. Then compare it with what the house is doing. Is it staying comfortable, or losing temperature while heat is requested?

ecobee’s Premium guide explains that auxiliary heat helps a heat pump warm the home and can keep it warm when the heat pump cannot in very cold weather. The warning alone is not a reason to turn that heat source off.

For a house that is not warming, continue with the ecobee heating and cooling checks. That guide covers the heat request, equipment testing and configuration. This page stays with the meaning of the message.

Similar names, different jobs: ecobee's Aux Outdoor Temp Alert sends a warning; the Premium guide's Aux Heat Max Outdoor Temperature controls whether auxiliary heat can run.

Failed heating, failed cooling or a temperature alert

Check 3

Read which condition triggered the alert

ecobee’s alert descriptions make these distinctions:

Message or alert category What ecobee is reporting
Heating or cooling failure The system failed to heat or cool the home
Low Temp Alert The home is below the selected alert temperature
High Temp Alert The home is above the selected alert temperature
Low or High Humidity Alert Relative humidity has reached the selected alert level

Look at the room temperature and the temperature you asked for. For an actual loss of heat or cooling, follow the ecobee equipment guide above; changing an alert limit is not the repair.

ecobee describes its low and high temperature alerts as protection against freezing or excessive heat damage. Treat a continuing temperature problem as something to resolve, even if you can make the notification disappear.

Calibrating, with heating and cooling unavailable

Check 4

Separate initial setup from repeated restarts

For Smart Thermostat Premium after initial setup, ecobee’s installation guide allows up to 20 minutes for temperature calibration before heating or cooling resumes. Let that setup stage finish if the home can safely wait.

A message that returns with repeated black screens deserves a different response. ecobee’s rebooting guidance explains that the thermostat takes power from the heating and cooling equipment, with no internal power source.

That guidance lists interrupted power and equipment safety switches among possible causes of restarts. It also says gaps in System Monitor runtime data can help identify power losses. If this keeps happening, have the equipment’s power supply and safety shutdowns investigated rather than repeatedly restarting the thermostat.

Use the thermostat fault guide if the screen stays blank. A recurring loss of power is a separate problem from finishing the first setup.

A flame with an exclamation mark

Check 5

Read the explanation before overriding it

In the Smart Thermostat Premium guide, ecobee explains that this symbol can mean auxiliary heat has been temporarily disabled to save energy. It appears when a compressor to auxiliary heat setting calls for assistance but the outdoor temperature exceeds Aux Heat Maximum Outdoor Temperature.

ecobee says tapping the symbol and then Learn More explains the condition. The displayed options include Override For 2 Hours, which temporarily ignores that outdoor limit, and Modify, which changes the threshold.

Read the explanation first. If those controls are unfamiliar, follow the support advice in the safety box before choosing an override or a new limit. An exclamation mark here does not by itself name a failed part.

Where to change reminders and alerts

Check 6

Choose the notification setting you actually mean

ecobee’s support page gives these paths:

  • Thermostat: Main Menu, General, Reminders and Alerts, then Preferences.
  • Smart Thermostat Lite and Essential: Main Menu, Reminders and Alerts, then Preferences.
  • App: Home, Thermostat, Menu, Reminders and Alerts, then Alert Preferences or Reminder Preferences.

There are two different switches to watch. In ecobee’s Premium guide, Display Alerts on Thermostat hides messages on the screen while email and web portal alerts continue. Enable Heating/Cooling Alerts instead controls whether heating and cooling failure alerts are generated.

For a completed maintenance job, the Premium guide lets you update the last service, filter or lamp change date and its reminder interval. Put the real completion date there so the next reminder relates to work that was actually done.

What each one takes

What you found What the next step involves
Maintenance reminder Check the service record; maintenance or a replacement filter if due
Auxiliary heat usage alert Review the alert limit and whether the home is warming; support help for unfamiliar equipment settings
Failed heating or cooling Equipment checks; a service visit if the fault remains unresolved
Premium temperature calibration after setup Allow its documented setup period; investigate repeated power loss separately
Premium auxiliary heat restriction Read Learn More; confirm the threshold suits the installed system before changing it

Questions people ask

What is ecobee error 10?

ecobee lists error 10 in its Smart Doorbell Camera (wired) registration troubleshooting: the doorbell could not connect to Wi-Fi. That definition belongs to the doorbell. If your message is on a thermostat, give ecobee support its full wording and model rather than applying the doorbell procedure.

What is ecobee error 12?

In the same wired doorbell chart, ecobee defines error 12 as failure to connect to its server and directs the owner to support. It is not a thermostat heating diagnosis.

Is E298 an ecobee thermostat error?

Google documents E298 as a Nest power help code. If the actual display says Nest and E298, use the Nest error code guide. Do not transfer that code’s wiring instructions to an ecobee.

Why did the alert not arrive by email?

ecobee says unsubscribing from its emails also stops reminder and alert emails. Its support team can help you subscribe again. That is separate from hiding alerts on the thermostat screen.

Does Premium air quality calibration stop the heat?

No. ecobee’s Premium installation guide says air quality calibration can take up to eight hours and does not affect heating or cooling control. That is a different calibration from the temperature setup stage described above.
