HeatCoolFix is a repair guide for the machines that heat and cool a home: furnaces, air conditioners, heat pumps, mini splits, thermostats and water heaters.
Every page here takes one fault, the kind you type into a search box at ten at night, and works through it the way a technician does. Cheap parts first, expensive parts last, and a plain answer about when the machine is finished and not worth another part.
How a guide is written
The steps come from the makers’ own service manuals and from the order a technician checks things in, not from a list of ideas. Where a number matters, the number is in the guide: what a good element reads on a meter, what a blink code means, what a part costs.
If a fault has one likely cause, the guide says so instead of padding out five. If the honest answer is that the tank has rusted through and a new heater is the only fix, it says that too.
What this site will not do
It will not tell you to call a professional on every page and leave it there. It will not review products it has not looked at, and it will not invent a price.
It will also not pretend that everything is a home job. Gas, refrigerant and mains wiring belong to a licensed technician, and every guide says exactly where that line is.
Who writes it
Ray Bennett writes the guides on HeatCoolFix. He is a researcher and writer, not a licensed technician, and he says so in plain sight because it matters on a repair site. Each guide is built from the maker’s own service manual, the parts lists and the order a technician works in, then checked against the manual again before it goes up.
HeatCoolFix takes no work from manufacturers and sells no repairs. When a guide names a part, it is because that part is the one that failed.
Corrections
If something on a page is wrong, it gets fixed and the date on the page changes. A guide that sends somebody to the wrong part costs them money, so a correction is worth more here than a new article.
