Rinnai Gas Heater Error Codes: EX38CT 11, 14 and 99

Rinnai Gas Heater Error Codes: EX38CT 11, 14 and 99
Short answer

For the Rinnai EX38CT direct vent wall furnace, 11 means no ignition, 14 means overheat and 99 means flue block. Record the full code and match the model. Use the ON/OFF button for a normal shutdown, and let the cooling fan finish before unplugging. A code that remains or returns needs service.

Rinnai gas heater error codes belong to a specific heater. In Rinnai’s EX38CT wall furnace manual, 11 is no ignition, 14 is overheat and 99 is flue block. The code helps describe the fault; it does not identify a replacement part by itself.

This page covers the direct vent EX38CT, also identified as RHFE-1005FTA2. It does not use a Rinnai tankless water heater or portable heater chart. Start with the model on your paperwork or an accessible label, even if the number on the display looks familiar.

For another kind of wall furnace, our gas wall heater troubleshooting guide helps separate the equipment types.

Before you start

What to carry: a torch, the heater’s manual and a phone to record its display. Note whether the code appeared during ignition or after heating had begun. Leave the cabinet fitted.

Gas or electric? This is a gas-fired direct vent wall furnace with an electrical supply and fans. Rinnai says its burner lights automatically. Do not try to light it by hand or follow a standing-pilot lighting procedure.

Renting? Give maintenance the model, code and any action already tried. That helps prevent another person repeating a failed restart.

Gas smell and a cooling fan need different responses.
If you smell gas, Rinnai says not to light an appliance, touch electrical switches or use a phone inside the building. Call the gas supplier from a neighbor’s phone and follow its instructions. If the supplier cannot be reached, call the fire department. Do not start the routine checks below.

For an ordinary shutdown without a gas smell, use the ON/OFF button. Rinnai says the fan keeps running to cool the heater. Do not unplug the appliance while it is operating or while the fans are on.

Rinnai reserves repairs for qualified service. Do not remove panels, insert objects into louvers or operate a heater with damaged or missing panels. Wear hand protection when touching the side back covers, front louver or rear convection-air intake; those areas can be hot.

Code 11: no ignition

Check 1Supply and outside vent observations, then service if repeated

Record 11 before trying to clear it

Rinnai’s EX38CT code table calls 11 no ignition. It asks for a check that gas is on and the vent termination is not blocked, refers to the restart function, and requires a service call if the fault repeats.

Confirm the known supply status without dismantling anything. If the gas was deliberately shut off or you cannot identify the valve safely, tell service. Do not open an unknown valve, purge a gas line or force a control with tools. Rinnai’s operating instructions say a gas control that will not move by hand needs a qualified technician.

The EX38CT restart section describes an automatic ignition attempt after one hour when ignition fails. Code 11 remains visible during that interval and disappears after successful ignition. Rinnai also says this code is not stored in fault history, so a photo can help the service visit.

That automatic behavior is not an instruction to keep pressing buttons. Rinnai’s general code instruction says to arrange service if a code remains or returns on the next operation. Follow that boundary when no ignition keeps recurring.

For Rinnai EX38CT only: 11 is no ignition, 14 is overheat and 99 is flue block. The owner's observations stay outside the cabinet.

Code 14 and the filter lamp

Check 2Accessible filter cleaning with the heater off and cool

Let the heater cool before filter care

Rinnai defines 14 as overheat. Its filter section explains that blocked filters can trigger a flashing filter lamp and beeping, followed by shutdown and code 14. The code table says to clean the filter and call service if the problem repeats.

Use the ON/OFF control and allow the cooling fan to finish. With the heater off and cool, Rinnai says to remove the accessible filters and clean them with a soft dry cloth or vacuum. For greasy filters, it specifies warm soapy water, rinsing and complete drying.

Refit the filters before operation. Rinnai prohibits using the heater without them. This filter procedure does not require removing the furnace’s front panel or cleaning its burner; leave that service work to a qualified technician.

If 14 returns, report the cleaned filter and repeated code. Rinnai says replacement of a fusible link belongs to a qualified service agency, which must also determine the cause of overheating. Do not bridge that safety device.

Code 16 is room overheat; 99 is flue block

Check 3Room-temperature or outside-terminal observations

Keep a hot room separate from a vent fault

Rinnai calls 16 room overheat and specifies lowering room temperature below 104°F, or 40°C. It is a separate entry from code 14. Report which code appeared instead of describing both as the same overheat message.

For 99, Rinnai says to check around the flue terminal for blockage. Its maintenance instructions specifically require keeping the terminal clear of snow and ice because obstructed intake or exhaust affects operation.

Inspect only from a safe, accessible position. Remove a loose outside obstruction only when you can do so safely without touching hot parts or dismantling the flue. Do not climb to reach it, push anything into the terminal or disconnect the vent. If access is unsafe, have service inspect it.

Rinnai’s code-table footnote says the flue must remain clear to expel exhaust gases. If the appliance still fails to operate, contact a qualified service agency. A cleared outside opening does not establish that the entire vent system is sound.

73 and the faults assigned to service

Check 4One normal off/on check, with service for a persistent code

Use the control button, not the plug, for the stated restart

Rinnai defines 73 as communication error and tells the reader to turn the furnace off, then on again. Use its ON/OFF control and preserve the fan’s cooling run. The manual’s general rule sends a code that remains or returns on the next operation to service.

The EX38CT table assigns service calls to codes 30 to 35, 49, 53, 61, 62, 70, 71, 72 and 81. Those rows concern temperature sensors, the sparker, fans, switches, solenoids or flame rod. They are not owner instructions to replace the named component.

Keep the exact message with the service request. Rinnai also calls for an annual inspection by a qualified service technician. Accessible filter care does not replace that inspection.

Rinnai's EX38CT filter care requires the heater off and cool. Let the cooling fan finish, dry washed filters completely and refit them before operation.

What each one takes

Finding Work involved
11 once Recording the message and checking known supply and outside vent conditions
14 with dirty filters Off-and-cool accessible filter care, with service if repeated
16 Lowering room temperature as specified by Rinnai
99 Safe outside obstruction check, or a qualified vent inspection
A returning code or a service-only row Qualified diagnosis with the model and complete code

Questions people ask

Where is the Rinnai gas heater error codes PDF?

The source is Rinnai’s EX38CT installation and operation manual. The code table is on page 33, filter care on page 31 and the restart explanation on page 34.

Why does code 11 stay visible while the heater waits?

Rinnai’s EX38CT restart section describes a one-hour interval before another automatic ignition attempt following ignition failure. It says 11 remains during that interval. Repeated failure needs service.

Is code 14 the same as the filter lamp?

Rinnai distinguishes the flashing filter warning from the later overheat shutdown. Its filter section says a blocked filter can lead to code 14. Clean the accessible filters only with the heater off and cool.

Can I unplug the heater to clear a code?

Rinnai says not to unplug it during operation or while the fans run. Use the normal ON/OFF control and let the cooling fan finish.

Does this explain code 12 on a Rinnai water heater?

No. This guide uses the EX38CT gas space-heater chart, which does not list 12. A water heater needs its own model-specific manual.
