Ruud Furnace Error Codes: R96T, 22 and 33
For the Ruud R96T family covered here, 22 means the main limit is open and 33 means the manual-reset rollout limit circuit is open. Both need qualified diagnosis. Do not bypass or reset a safety control to restore heat. Record the complete display sequence, since a lockout code can alternate with another fault.
Ruud furnace error codes need the model and the complete display sequence. For the R96T family covered here, the installation manual calls 22 main limit open and 33 manual-reset rollout limit open. Neither is an instruction to press a safety switch and try heating again.
Ruud identifies R96T as its Achiever Plus two-stage furnace with a constant-torque motor. This guide uses the matching (-)96T installation instructions, revision 92-24161-157-04. It is not a code chart for every Ruud furnace, an EcoNet thermostat or a newer control revision.
Our furnace light guide explains why the equipment’s own chart matters. This page preserves the R96T manual’s numbers and service boundaries.
Before you start
What to carry: a torch, installation paperwork and a phone for a display video. Use an accessible label or service record to identify the furnace. Keep all doors and compartment covers in place.
Gas or electric? This is a gas furnace with electrical controls and motors. It is separate from an outdoor heat pump, even when both serve the same home. Match each message to the cabinet or thermostat where it appeared.
Renting? Send maintenance the model, complete sequence and whether the blower continues running. Tell them about resets already attempted.
For a gas smell, the R96T manual says to leave the building, avoid electrical switches and phones inside, and call the gas supplier from a neighbor’s phone. If the supplier cannot be reached, call the fire department. Do not return until authorized.
If overheating occurs or gas fails to shut off, the manual directs shutting the furnace’s manual gas control valve. If you cannot identify or reach it safely, leave and get emergency assistance. Do not start routine filter or code checks during that condition.
The manual prohibits bypassing, jumpering or removing safety switches. It says safety controls must not be reset without corrective action or verification of safe operation by a qualified installer, service agency or gas supplier. Leave internal controls, wiring and combustion work to them.
Read the full sequence before calling it a flash count
Keep both digits and any second code
The R96T manual describes a seven-segment display. A two-digit fault appears as the first digit, then the second digit, followed by a pause. If two faults are present, the display can alternate between them. A short video helps preserve their order without removing a door.
Its normal-operation table identifies 0 as standby with no fault and no thermostat call. Uppercase H means high gas heat, lowercase h means low gas heat, and F means a continuous fan call. Those letters describe operating modes rather than faults.
The same table uses C for cooling or heat pump operation. Record the actual symptom as well: a mode letter alone does not explain why a room is cold. If you cannot see a display with the cabinet closed, use the thermostat message and let service read the board.
10, 11, 12 and 13 describe different ignition conditions
Keep the original fault with a lockout message
The R96T manual defines 10 as one-hour lockout. It can accompany failed ignition, lost flame, water-sensing, blower or other faults described in the detailed table. Do not reduce an alternating 10 and 11 sequence to just “lockout.”
The manual defines 11 as failed ignition. It describes four consecutive failed ignition attempts leading to lockout, with 10 and 11 alternating. Its possibilities include a flame-sensing problem, a gas valve turned off, an igniter problem or a control problem.
Code 12 is low flame sense. The manual says operation can continue with that message while flame-sense current is weak or marginal. Code 13 means a flame that was established is no longer sensed during a valid heat call.
Give service the exact sequence and what happened before it. Leave flame-sensor cleaning, igniter positioning, wiring and gas-pressure checks to the technician. The manual’s corrective actions are service procedures, not owner steps inside the burner compartment.
22 and 33 are safety-limit faults
Do not press a rollout reset or bypass a limit
The R96T table defines 22 as the main limit open or sensed open. Its possibilities include no or insufficient airflow, a faulty limit, loose wiring, a nonfunctional blower and excessive input. The manual describes the blower running at maximum heating speed while the gas valve circuit is de-energized.
Note whether accessible room registers or return grilles are covered. The manual’s customer instructions say to keep those openings unobstructed and filters clean. After any unsafe condition has been addressed, disconnect the furnace’s main electrical power before filter maintenance and follow the installed filter arrangement’s owner instructions. Refit the filter and secure all doors and covers before operation. Do not remove a service panel to investigate a limit fault.
The manual defines 33 as the manual-reset rollout limit circuit being open. Its description calls this a serious problem requiring repair before furnace operation continues. Possible causes include insufficient inlet or exhaust venting, loose or faulty wiring and an unstable flame pattern.
The words “manual reset” name the control. They do not authorize an owner restart. Apply the manual’s safety-switch warning above and have a qualified person investigate before any reset.
Pressure, drain and blower messages need their own diagnosis
Report the code instead of ordering a switch
The R96T manual distinguishes switches that are closed before the inducer starts from switches that remain open while it runs. Preserve the exact number:
| Code | R96T manual description |
|---|---|
| 44 | Low pressure switch closed, inducer off |
| 45 | Low pressure switch open, inducer on high speed |
| 46 | Low pressure switch open, inducer on low speed |
| 55 | High pressure switch closed, inducer off |
| 57 | High pressure switch open, inducer on high speed |
| 58 | Water circuit open |
| 59 | Water sensed or blocked drain |
| 61 | Blower fault, motor cannot run |
For the open pressure-switch rows, the manual lists vent restriction, an inducer problem, wiring, hoses and the pressure switch among possible causes. That list requires diagnosis; it does not prove the switch has failed.
The detailed drain rows also separate 58 from 59. An open water-sensor circuit is different from detected water. Report visible leakage from a safe position, but leave trap removal, sensor work and internal drain repairs to service. Do not bridge a sensor to make heat return.
What each one takes
| Finding | Work involved |
|---|---|
| An available display | Model identification and recording the complete sequence |
| Repeated ignition or flame faults | Qualified ignition, sensing and gas-supply checks |
| 22 or 33 | Qualified safety-limit investigation before any reset |
| A pressure or drain code | Vent, inducer, condensate and circuit diagnosis |
| Routine upkeep | Accessible filter care and the recommended annual professional inspection |
Questions people ask
Where is the Ruud furnace error codes PDF?
The source is installation manual 92-24161-157-04 for the (-)96T family. Codes begin on page 88. Ruud identifies its R96T Achiever Plus furnace on its product page.
Can I reset code 33 myself?
The manual prohibits resetting safety controls without corrective action or qualified verification of safe operation. Its rollout-limit description says the serious underlying problem must be repaired before operation continues.
Does 22 prove the filter is dirty?
No. The R96T table lists airflow problems alongside limit, wiring, blower and input problems. A filter check does not settle the diagnosis.
Is lowercase h an error?
In this manual it means a call for low-stage gas heat. Uppercase H means a call for high-stage gas heat. Keep the case when reporting the display.
Does this cover every Ruud or Rheem furnace?
No. Use it only with the named R96T family and matching control instructions. Other series and revisions need their own charts.
The other furnace guides: separately scoped Rheem furnace codes, reading a furnace light and a furnace with no warm air.
