Weil-McLain ECO Tec Error Codes: Blower Fault and Lockouts
Short answer

A Weil-McLain ECO Tec Series 2 names its faults on the touchscreen instead of using numbers. In a lockout the banner turns red and shows the fault, such as LOW WATER CUTOFF. Select reset, then press the Reset button on the next screen, and call for service if the fault continues. Blower Fault 1, 2 and 3 clear by themselves after 1 hour.

Weil-McLain ECO Tec error codes on the Series 2 are names on the touchscreen, not numbers. When the ECO Tec Series 2 locks out, the banner at the top of the screen turns red and the fault is named, such as LOW WATER CUTOFF, IGNITION 1 FAULT or Blower Fault 2.

Some faults clear by themselves, some after an hour, and some need the reset on the screen. Everything below comes from Weil-McLain’s own boiler manual and user’s information manual for the ECO Tec Series 2.

Before you start

What to carry: a torch, a pen, and paper for the fault name, the time it happened and the CP number. Weil-McLain asks for the model number from the boiler rating label and the Consumer Protection (CP) number from the boiler cabinet when you call about the boiler.

Gas or electric? Gas. The ECO Tec is a wall mount, gas-fired condensing boiler; a floor stand kit is an option.

Which ECO Tec is it? The heat only models are the 80, 110, 150 and 199 (ECO Tec 110-H, for example), and the combi models, which also make the house’s hot water, are the 110, 150 and 199 (ECO Tec 110-C). This guide is for the Series 2, with the color touchscreen.

Renting? Send the fault name, the model and whether you still have heat and hot water to whoever arranges repairs.

If you smell gas, leave the boiler alone.
What Weil-McLain says to do: do not try to light any appliance, do not touch any electrical switch, and do not use any telephone in your building. Call your gas supplier at once from a neighbor’s telephone and follow its instructions, or the fire department if you cannot reach the supplier.

If the boiler overheats, keep the circulator powered. Should the boiler overheat or the gas supply fail to shut off, Weil-McLain says not to turn off or disconnect the electrical supply to the circulator. Shut off the gas supply at a location outside the boiler instead.

Been under water? If any part of the boiler, burner or controls has been sprayed with or submerged under water, do not try to run it until it has been replaced or completely repaired and inspected. If any electrical part or wiring came into contact with water, or may have, Weil-McLain says not to use the boiler and to call a qualified service technician at once.

Never add cold water to a hot boiler. Weil-McLain says the thermal shock can crack the heat exchanger.

The red banner, and how to reset it

Weil-McLain’s boiler manual says the display banner turns red because of an error or limit event. Its user’s information manual gives the owner these steps:

  1. During a fault, the status changes to LOCKOUT and the screen shows the fault’s name, with a reset on the screen.
  2. Select reset on the screen.
  3. On the next screen, press the Reset button to reset the fault.
  4. Call for service if the fault continues.

The boiler manual tells technicians to find the cause of an outage and not to leave the boiler operating without a complete diagnosis. The control keeps a FAULT HISTORY of up to six lockouts that your technician can read.

Not a fault: a blue banner that toggles to a maintenance screen means the maintenance timer has run out. It shows during standby only, and the boiler operates as normal. When maintenance is due, the main screen shows wrenches; Weil-McLain says to have a qualified technician inspect the boiler, and you can reset the reminder screen to clear it. WWSD, warm weather shut down, stops the boiler firing for space heating when it is warmer outside than its WWSD setting, and does not affect hot water.

THE ECO TEC SCREEN: LOCKOUT, RESET, MAINTENANCE A Lockout RED BANNER LOW WATER CUTOFF RESET banner turns red The fault is named on the screen, no number B Reset NEXT SCREEN Reset select, then press Fault continues? Call for service C Maintenance due WRENCHES blue banner, standby Boiler runs as normal; have it inspected
The ECO Tec Series 2 screen states from Weil-McLain's manuals. A: a red banner with the fault name, such as LOW WATER CUTOFF, and a reset on the screen. B: select reset, then press the Reset button on the next screen, and call for service if the fault continues. C: wrenches on the main screen and a blue banner toggling to a maintenance screen mean maintenance is due, and the boiler operates as normal.

What the messages mean

Selected rows from Weil-McLain’s fault table in the ECO Tec Series 2 boiler manual:

Message What Weil-McLain’s table says How it resets
IGNITION 1 FAULT 5 ignition attempts and no flame detected, or the flame signal never reached the minimum Itself after 1 hour, or manual reset
IGNITION 2 FAULT 5 ignition attempts without reaching the running flame threshold Itself after 1 hour, or manual reset
FLAME LOSS FAULT 5 ignition attempts and the flame dropped during stabilization Itself after 1 hour, or manual reset
LOW WTR CUTOFF OPEN The internal low water cutoff contacts opened Manual reset
HIGH TEMP LIMIT The boiler reached its High Temp Limit setting Manual reset
FLUE TEMP TOO HIGH Flue temperature above 210°F (warning) or 220°F (lockout) Manual reset above 220°F
TEMP RISE TOO QUICKLY Water in the heat exchanger rose faster than 10°F a second in the burner’s first two minutes Itself after 1 minute; manual after 5 automatic resets in one heat demand
Supply 60F > Return Water leaving is more than 60°F hotter than water coming back Itself, after a soft lockout of 2 minutes 30 seconds or more
FALSE FLAME Flame detected when there should be none Manual reset
AIR PRESSURE Switch Open The air pressure connection is open Manual reset
GAS RELAY FAULT 1-4 A problem with the gas valve output circuit Retries; manual reset if locked out
Control fault A RAM or ROM error on the main board Manual reset
Temperature Sensor (Open or Short) A named sensor reads open or shorted Itself when the sensor reads normally
Outdoor Sensor Error The outdoor sensor is shorted or open; a warning only Itself when the condition clears

Weil-McLain lists some screens as warnings. One of them, Target Reduced – Boiler, needs no corrective action: its table says the boiler is operating normally.

Blower Fault 1, 2 and 3

All three clear automatically after 1 hour, Weil-McLain’s table says. What each one means:

  • Blower Fault 1: the blower does not reach zero RPM within 4 minutes when the mode is Standby or Prepump.
  • Blower Fault 2: the blower cannot reach the required pre-purge or ignition speed, or failed to complete its calibration within 4 minutes.
  • Blower Fault 3: the blower is outside its minimum or maximum speed for 10 seconds.

Weil-McLain’s corrective actions are inside the boiler: loose or damaged wires on the blower motor harnesses, and for 2 and 3, recalibrating the blower motor in the Boiler Settings menu. Those are for a qualified service technician. If a blower fault comes back after it has cleared, write down which number it was for them.

ECO TEC: WAIT AN HOUR, OR RESET A Clear after 1 hour Blower Fault 1, 2, 3 clear automatically after 1 hour IGNITION 1 FAULT, IGNITION 2 FAULT FLAME LOSS FAULT reset after 1 hour, or with a manual reset B Need the manual reset LOW WTR CUTOFF OPEN HIGH TEMP LIMIT FALSE FLAME AIR PRESSURE Switch Open and FLUE TEMP TOO HIGH, above 220°F
Which ECO Tec faults clear on their own and which need the reset, from Weil-McLain's table. A: Blower Fault 1, 2 and 3 clear automatically after 1 hour; IGNITION 1 FAULT, IGNITION 2 FAULT and FLAME LOSS FAULT reset after 1 hour or with a manual reset. B: LOW WTR CUTOFF OPEN, HIGH TEMP LIMIT, FALSE FLAME, AIR PRESSURE Switch Open, and FLUE TEMP TOO HIGH above 220°F need the manual reset.

What you can check

Check 1Free, nothing to open

Write down the fault, then reset once

Note the fault name and the time and date shown on the screen. Then reset it as above. If the same fault comes back, call for service rather than resetting it again and again.

Check 2Free, a look at the switch

Blank screen: the switch and the breaker

For a blank screen with nothing else running, the first check in Weil-McLain’s troubleshooting table is that the service switch and/or circuit breaker to the boiler is turned on. If they are on and the screen is still blank, the next checks are the power supply and the control’s fuses, which are for a technician.

Check 3Free, a look outside

Ignition faults: the vent and air intake outside

One of Weil-McLain’s checks for the ignition faults is the flue pipe and intake pipe, for restrictions or blockage. Its user’s manual also says the boiler has a control that shuts it down if the air or vent is blocked. If the blockage is easy to reach and remove, remove it, and the boiler should try to restart within an hour. If it is not obvious or cannot be removed, have the boiler and system checked by a qualified service technician. Its monthly owner check is a look along the vent and air piping for any blockage, leakage or deterioration; notify a qualified service technician at once if you find any problem.

Its daily owner checks are that the vent discharge and air intake are clean and free of obstructions, with any debris removed, and that the boiler jacket door is securely closed. If the door does not close correctly or its gaskets are damaged, Weil-McLain says to contact your installer or technician immediately.

Check 4Free to look; a technician if the trap is dry

Ignition faults: the condensate trap

Weil-McLain’s ignition fault checks also include the condensate trap, for a blockage that lets condensate collect inside the heat exchanger. The trap must have water in it whenever the boiler runs, the boiler manual says, so flue gas cannot escape through the condensate drain line.

Weil-McLain says to interrupt the electrical supply and let the boiler cool before any maintenance; on a floor stand, the trap sits behind the pedestal’s front access panel. The user’s manual has the owner look at the drain tubing and its end, to see that condensate can run freely, and at the trap under the boiler: the ball float in place and free to move, and water in the trap. Contact a boiler service technician at once if you find the trap dry.

Check 5Free; a technician for the water

LOW WATER CUTOFF: read the gauge

Weil-McLain’s first check for this fault is for a low water condition in the system, which is a repair for a technician. Read the pressure/temperature gauge and give your technician the number.

Weil-McLain’s daily owner check is that the gauge does not read above 24 psig, since higher pressure may mean a problem with the expansion tank. If the relief valve often weeps, the expansion tank may not be working properly, and Weil-McLain says to contact a qualified service technician at once. Have any water leak around the piping repaired at once by a qualified service technician.

What each one takes

What you see What the work involves
A fault that resets and stays clear Nothing more; note the name in case it returns
Blank screen Checking the service switch and breaker; a technician for fuses
Blower Fault 1, 2 or 3 that keeps returning A technician for the blower wiring and calibration
Ignition faults Clearing the vent and air intake; a technician if not obvious
Dry condensate trap A boiler service technician, at once
LOW WATER CUTOFF A technician for the low water condition
Wrenches or a maintenance screen An inspection by a qualified technician

Questions people ask

What is Blower Fault 2 on a Weil-McLain ECO Tec?

The blower could not reach the required pre-purge or ignition speed, or failed to complete its calibration within 4 minutes. It clears automatically after 1 hour. If it returns, a technician checks the blower motor harnesses and recalibrates the blower.

How do I reset a Weil-McLain ECO Tec boiler?

Select reset on the lockout screen, then press the Reset button on the next screen. Call for service if the fault continues.

Why is my ECO Tec screen red?

The banner turns red because of an error or limit event. The fault’s name is on the screen.

Why are there wrenches on my ECO Tec screen?

Maintenance is due. The boiler operates as normal; have a qualified technician inspect it, and the reminder can be reset to clear it.

What does IGNITION 1 FAULT mean on an ECO Tec?

The boiler went through 5 ignition attempts without detecting flame, or the flame signal never reached its minimum. It resets after 1 hour or with a manual reset. Weil-McLain’s checks include the condensate trap and the flue and intake pipes.
