Weil-McLain AquaBalance Error Codes: A01, F37 and A16
Short answer

The Weil-McLain AquaBalance shows A or F with a number. A codes are hard lockouts: press RESET for 1 second once the cause is dealt with. F codes reset themselves when the condition clears. A01 is no burner ignition after five attempts, F37 is system water pressure too low, and A16 means no outdoor sensor is connected on a heating only boiler.

Weil-McLain AquaBalance error codes come in two kinds: an A on the status display is a hard lockout that needs a manual reset, and an F is a soft lockout that resets itself. The number on the temperature display tells you which fault it is.

Weil-McLain’s boiler manual is blunt about the A codes: make sure to determine the causes of outages, and do not leave the boiler operating without a complete diagnosis. Everything below comes from Weil-McLain’s own manuals for the AquaBalance Series 2, the wall mounted condensing boiler sold as a combi or a heating only model.

Before you start

What to carry: a torch, a pen, and paper for the code and the pressure gauge reading. Nothing needs opening, except the condensate trap if it needs cleaning.

Gas or electric? Gas. The AquaBalance burns natural gas or propane, and it has an electrical supply too: Weil-McLain says to disconnect it before any maintenance, to avoid electric shock, but never while it is overheating: see the box below.

Is it an AquaBalance? Weil-McLain says to have the model number from the boiler rating label when you call about it. The Series 2 comes in 80, 120 and 155 sizes. For other Weil-McLain boilers, such as the Ultra, see Weil-McLain boiler error codes.

Renting? Send the code, the gauge reading and whether you have heat and hot water to whoever arranges repairs.

If it overheats, keep the pump on and shut the gas.
Overheating, or gas that will not shut off: Weil-McLain says do not turn off or disconnect the electrical supply to the circulator. Instead, shut off the gas supply at a location external to the boiler.

If you smell gas: do not try to light any appliance, do not touch any electrical switch, and do not use any telephone in the building. Call your gas supplier at once from a neighbor’s telephone and follow its instructions, or the fire department if you cannot reach the supplier.

Been under water? If any part of the boiler, burner or controls has been sprayed with or submerged under water, Weil-McLain says do not operate it until it has been replaced or completely repaired and inspected.

A carbon monoxide detector wired on the same circuit as the boiler is strongly recommended, Weil-McLain says.

A codes and F codes

Weil-McLain’s manual splits every fault in two. A codes are manual reset lockouts that block the heat demand: press the RESET button for 1 second, and if the boiler fails to start, the fault has to be eliminated first. F codes cause temporary shutdowns that reset automatically as soon as the value returns to the boiler’s normal range.

There is also a limit. Weil-McLain says the number of resets is limited to 5 in 24 hours, and powering off and on resets that limit. Five resets that do not hold are a fault, not a reason to cut the power and try again.

AQUABALANCE: A CODES AND F CODES A Hard lockout A 01 RESET, 1 second Manual reset, at most 5 in 24 hours e.g. A01, A03, A06, A16, A23 Comes back? A technician F Soft lockout F 37 resets itself Clears when the value is back in range e.g. F07, F15, F20, F37, F39 F07 3 times in 24 hours becomes A04
Weil-McLain's two kinds of AquaBalance code. A, a hard lockout such as A01: press RESET for 1 second once the cause is found, at most 5 resets in 24 hours. F, a soft lockout such as F37: it resets itself when the value returns to the normal range.
Code What Weil-McLain’s tables say
A01 No burner ignition after five attempts
A02 False flame indication
A03 High limit protection: pump does not run or no water circulation
A04 F07 repeated 3 times in the last 24 hours
A06 6 times flame loss in 4 minutes time frame
A16 Outside sensor is not connected
A23 Nominal water pressure not reached within maximum allowed time
A26 F40 repeated 3 times in the last hour
F07 The exhaust gases temperature is too high
F15 Minimum and maximum frequency feedback from fan error
F20 The water pressure in the CH installation is near the low level
F37 The water pressure in the CH installation is too low
F39 Outside sensor error
F40 The water pressure in the CH installation is too high, or there is a control fault
F43 Heat exchanger protection
F51 Low water error

What you can check

Check 1Free, nothing to open

Write down the letter and the number

Weil-McLain says the display flashes with the fault symbol when there is a fault. Write down whether it is A or F and the number, and read the pressure/temperature gauge at the same time.

If the display shows FH after the boiler is powered up, that is not a fault. Weil-McLain’s manual says FH shows for the first 300 seconds and identifies the air purge function.

Check 2Free; a technician if it returns

With an A code, press RESET once

Press the RESET button for 1 second. If the boiler starts and stays running, note the code. If the same A code comes back, Weil-McLain’s corrections are technician work: for A01 they include the gas supply, the ignition and detection electrode, the gas valve, the gas supply pressure and a blocked condensate trap.

Remember the limit of 5 resets in 24 hours. The manual’s warning is not to leave the boiler operating without a complete diagnosis.

Check 3Free to read; a technician to fill and fix

With F37 or F20, read the pressure gauge

Weil-McLain calls F37 incorrect system water pressure, too low below 8 psi, and says its boiler water pressure switch is set for 9 psi (plus or minus 2) minimum. Its other F37 corrections, a damaged or disconnected pressure switch and the pump direction on a heating only boiler, are technician work. F20 is a warning that the pressure is near the low level, and the boiler keeps heating.

Read the gauge and look around the boiler, the piping and the relief valve for water. The user’s manual says leaks in the boiler or piping must be repaired at once, by a qualified service technician, and never to add cold water to a hot boiler, because thermal shock can crack the heat exchanger. On the high side, the user’s manual says the gauge should not read above 24 psig, which may point to the expansion tank.

Check 4Free, a look outside

With A06, check the vent and air terminals outside

For A06, Weil-McLain’s corrections include removing any obstruction from the flue, exhaust ducts, air inlet and terminals. A04 is F07, exhaust gas temperature too high, repeated 3 times in 24 hours; Weil-McLain’s F07 corrections, air in the heat exchanger, combustion and water flow, are technician work.

The user’s manual says the boiler shuts itself down if its air or vent is blocked. If the blockage is easily accessible and removable, remove it, and the boiler should attempt to restart within an hour. If the blockage is not obvious or cannot be removed, have the boiler and system checked by a qualified service technician.

AQUABALANCE: WHAT THE OWNER CAN CHECK

inside outside

A 01

A B C D

A The pressure gauge not above 24 psig, Weil-McLain says

B Vent and air terminals remove a blockage only if it is easy to reach and remove

C The condensate trap under the boiler; it must have water in it, dry means call

D The display write down the A or F code

The owner checks in Weil-McLain's AquaBalance user's manual. A, read the pressure/temperature gauge: not above 24 psig. B, the vent and air terminals outside: clear any easily removed blockage. C, the condensate trap under the boiler: it must have water in it. D, the display: write down the A or F code.

Check 5Free, a look under the boiler

With A01, A06 or F15, look at the condensate trap

A blocked condensate trap is in Weil-McLain’s corrections for A01, A06 and F15. Its user’s manual makes the monthly owner check: inspect the condensate drain tubing and its end so condensate can run freely, and inspect the trap under the boiler for sediment, cleaning it out if necessary. Before any maintenance, Weil-McLain says to disconnect the electrical supply and let the boiler cool, to avoid shock and severe burns.

Make sure the trap has water in it. Weil-McLain says to contact a boiler service technician immediately if you find the trap dry, and to contact one if you see any other problem.

Check 6Free to note; the installer to fit or fix it

With A16 or F39, it is the outdoor sensor

On a heating only boiler, Weil-McLain’s quick start guide says A16 flashes when the unit is powered up with no outdoor sensor connected, and it should not appear on combi boilers. Its fix is to install the outdoor sensor and push reset. A faulty outdoor sensor gives F39, and the boiler manual lists a damaged sensor, shorted wiring, or a sensor disconnected after sliding temperature was turned on. Those are installer jobs.

What each one takes

What you see What the work involves
FH after power up Nothing; the air purge runs for 300 seconds
An A code that clears with one reset Note the code; Weil-McLain says to determine the causes of outages
An A code that keeps coming back A qualified technician for a complete diagnosis
F37 or F20, low pressure A technician to fill the system, fix any leak or check the pressure switch
A06 Clearing an easily removed blockage outside; a technician if none
A04 or F07 A technician
A dry or blocked condensate trap A boiler service technician
A16 or F39 The installer, for the outdoor sensor

Questions people ask

What does A01 mean on a Weil-McLain AquaBalance?

No burner ignition after five attempts. It is a hard lockout: press RESET for 1 second. If it returns, Weil-McLain’s corrections include the gas supply, the electrode, the gas valve and a blocked condensate trap, which call for a technician.

What does F37 mean on a Weil-McLain AquaBalance?

Incorrect system water pressure, too low below 8 psi. It resets itself once the pressure is back in range. Read the gauge, look for leaks, and have a technician fill the system, fix any leak or check the pressure switch.

Why does my AquaBalance show A16?

On a heating only boiler, A16 means no outdoor sensor is connected. Weil-McLain’s quick start guide says to install the outdoor sensor and push reset. It should not appear on a combi.

How many times can I reset an AquaBalance?

Weil-McLain limits resets to 5 in 24 hours. Powering off and on resets that limit, but the manual warns not to leave the boiler operating without a complete diagnosis.

What does FH mean on the display?

The air purge function. Weil-McLain says it shows for the first 300 seconds after power up, then the boiler is ready to run.

The other boiler guides: boiler not working, boiler pressure and boiler keeps turning off.
