Honeywell S8610U Error Codes: Green LED Flash Codes
Short answer

The Honeywell S8610U shows its error codes as flashes of a green status LED. 2 flashes is a 5 minute retry delay after the pilot flame was not detected, 3 a flame lost while running, 4 flame sensed out of sequence, 5 a vent damper error, 6 an internal error, 7 a flame rod shorted to ground and 8 low 24 volt supply. A heartbeat means a normal start.

Honeywell S8610U error codes are flashes of the green status LED on the control. The S8610U is Resideo’s universal intermittent pilot ignition control, used in central furnaces, residential boilers and other heating appliances in place of modules from Resideo, Robertshaw, Johnson Controls and others. A code number means the LED flashes that many times, stays off for two seconds, then repeats.

Some patterns are normal: off, a fast flash, a heartbeat, or a long on pulse. Everything below comes from Resideo’s installation instructions 69-1955 and its quick reference guide 69-2042.

Before you start

What to carry: a torch, and something to note the count. Resideo says the S8610U comes with a label of the LED codes that can be stuck inside the appliance, so look inside the appliance for it.

Is it an S8610U? It controls an intermittent pilot: a pilot that the control lights with a spark on a call for heat. Resideo says it does not replace controls on standing pilot appliances or on direct main burner ignition, so if your pilot burns all the time, this page is not for your appliance.

Count it the right way. Resideo says a single number code flashes X times at 2 Hz, two flashes a second, then the LED stays off for two seconds and repeats.

Gas, high voltage and the control itself.
If you smell gas: Resideo says turn off the gas at the manual service valve and leave the building. Do not try to light any appliance, and do not touch any electrical switch or telephone in the building until you are sure no spilled gas remains. On LP (propane) gas, Resideo adds that the gas is heavier than air and will not vent upward on its own, so do not operate electric switches, lights or appliances until you are sure the appliance area is free of gas.

Do not touch the spark terminal. Resideo warns that the ignition circuit makes over 10,000 volts and can give an electric shock.

If the control has been wet, do not use it. Resideo warns that the control can malfunction if it gets wet, leading to a build-up of explosive gas. Never try to use a control that has been wet, or looks like it has ever been wet; Resideo says replace it.

Leave the repair to a technician. Resideo says only trained, experienced service technicians should service intermittent pilot systems. The control cannot be repaired: if it malfunctions, it must be replaced, and it must not be modified in any way, taken apart or cleaned.

What each code means

Green LED What Resideo says it means What the control does next
Off No call for heat Nothing; normal
Flash fast Power up, internal check Nothing; normal
Heartbeat (half second bright, half second dim) Normal startup: the ignition sequence has started, prepurge included Nothing; normal
4 seconds on, then x flashes Run mode; x is the flame current Nothing; normal
2 5 minute retry delay: the pilot flame was not detected during the trial for ignition A new trial for ignition after the delay
3 Recycle: the flame failed while running A new trial for ignition; the code stays until the flame is proved
4 Flame sensed out of sequence Back to normal if it clears within 10 seconds; if longer, normal operation 1 hour after the error is corrected
5 Damper error: a damper is required but not present, or it failed to open or close within 60 seconds Normal operation once the damper error corrects
6 Control internal error Waits, and resumes when the fault corrects
7 Flame rod shorted to ground Waits, and resumes when the fault corrects
8 Low secondary voltage supply Waits, and resumes when the fault corrects
READING THE GREEN STATUS LED A A code, here 3 flashes at 2 Hz, then 2 seconds off, repeat 2 seconds off B Heartbeat half second bright, half second dim: normal start C Run mode 4 seconds on, then x flashes = flame current 4 seconds on x = 3 here
How to read the S8610U's green LED, from Resideo's instructions. A: a code, here 3, flashes that many times at two flashes a second, then the LED stays off for two seconds and repeats. B: the heartbeat, half a second bright and half a second dim, is a normal start. C: four seconds on, then a count of one second flashes, is run mode, and the count is the flame current.

What you can check

Check 1Free; the retry comes after a five minute delay

2 flashes: let it retry, or restart the call for heat

Resideo says the control tries to light the pilot, and if the pilot does not light or is not sensed, it shuts off the spark and the pilot gas and waits five minutes before another try. It keeps doing that until the pilot lights or the call for heat ends. The five minute delay can be skipped by cycling the thermostat, or by removing and restoring the system power.

If it fails to light on the next try, Resideo’s service list is the gas supply, the pilot burner, the spark and flame sense wiring, a flame rod that is dirty or out of position, and the burner ground connection. Those are a technician’s checks.

Check 2Free to watch; a technician to fix

3 flashes: the flame went out while running

The control starts a new trial for ignition at once, and the code stays through it until the flame is proved. If it fails to light on the next trial, Resideo’s list is the gas supply, the pilot burner, the flame sense wiring, a dirty flame rod and the burner ground connection, for a technician.

Check 3A technician, and the gas valve may need replacing

4 flashes: a flame when there should be none

The control has sensed a flame out of sequence. If it clears within 10 seconds, the control goes back to its normal sequence; if it lasts longer, the control waits until 1 hour after the error is corrected.

Resideo’s service action is to check for a pilot flame and replace the gas valve if one is present; if there is none, cycle the call for heat, and replace the control if the error repeats. A flame that should not be there is a call for a technician, and if you smell gas, follow the steps in the warning above.

Check 4Free to look; a technician for the wiring or damper

5 flashes: the vent damper

Code 5 is a damper error: a damper is required but not present, or it failed to open or to close within 60 seconds. Once the damper error corrects, the control goes back to normal. Resideo’s service actions are the damper connection, the damper wiring and the 24 volt connection on the control, then replacing the damper if needed.

Resideo also says that once the control has completed 10 ignition cycles with a vent damper connected, it will not work without one. So a damper that was unplugged or removed brings this code, and the damper has to be connected again. That is a technician’s job: Resideo says to disconnect the power supply before making any wiring connection.

WHERE EACH CODE POINTS

A B C D E

A Green status LED flashes the codes

B Vent damper plug (P1) code 5

C Spark and flame sense to the pilot: codes 2, 3 and 7

D 24 volt supply from the transformer: code 8

E The LED code label supplied to stick inside

Where each code points on an S8610U, drawn as a plain control, not the real board. A: the green status LED, which flashes the codes. B: the 6-pin vent damper plug (P1), for code 5. C: the spark and flame sense leads to the pilot, for codes 2, 3 and 7. D: the 24 volt supply from the transformer, for code 8. E: the label of LED codes that can be stuck inside the appliance.

Check 56: free to restart, a technician if it repeats. 7 and 8: a technician

6, 7 or 8 flashes: wait mode

For all three, the control stays in wait mode and resumes normal operation when the fault corrects. For 6, a control internal error, Resideo’s step is to cycle the call for heat, and to replace the control if the error repeats.

For 7, a flame rod shorted to ground, Resideo’s checks are the flame sense lead for damage or shorting, the flame rod’s position, and its ceramic for cracks, damage or tracking. For 8, a low secondary voltage supply, they are the transformer and the AC line, checked with the full system load. Both are technician work.

How to restart it

Resideo’s way to restart the control is to cycle the call for heat. Its troubleshooting notes say that once the control has shut off, it is reset by setting the thermostat down for at least 30 seconds; removing and restoring the system power also skips the five minute retry delay. If the same code comes back, the cause is still there, and the table above says where to look.

What each one takes

What you see What the work involves
Off, flash fast, heartbeat, 4 seconds on Nothing; normal operation
2 or 3 Waiting for the retry or cycling the call for heat; a technician if it will not light
4 A technician; the gas valve may need replacing
5 A technician to reconnect or fix the vent damper
6 Cycling the call for heat; a new control if it repeats
7 or 8 A technician for the flame rod, its lead, the transformer or the supply

Questions people ask

What does 6 flashes mean on a Honeywell S8610U?

A control internal error. The control stays in wait mode and resumes when the fault corrects. Resideo’s step is to cycle the call for heat, and to replace the control if the error repeats.

What is the damper error on an S8610U?

Five flashes: a damper is required but not present, or it failed to open or close within 60 seconds. After 10 ignition cycles with a damper connected, the control will not work without one.

How do I reset a Honeywell S8610U?

Cycle the call for heat: set the thermostat down for at least 30 seconds, then back up. Removing and restoring the power also skips the five minute retry delay.

What does a heartbeat light mean on an S8610U?

A normal startup: the ignition sequence has started, including the prepurge. The LED is half a second bright and half a second dim.

Can an S8610U be repaired?

No. Resideo says the ignition control module cannot be repaired, and if it malfunctions it must be replaced, by a trained, experienced service technician.
