Trane Thermostat Not Working: XL824, XL850 and XL1050
Trane's first answer to most XL824, XL850 and XL1050 problems is a reboot: Menu, Settings, Reboot, with the heating and cooling idle, or the thermostat's breaker off for 20 to 30 seconds. Trane says a reboot keeps your settings. A locked screen is Access Restrictions, bypassed by holding Menu for 5 seconds. A numeric error code is one for your dealer.
Trane’s XL824, XL850 and XL1050 are touchscreen smart thermostats, and most of what goes wrong with them is the screen, the WiFi or a setting rather than the heating and cooling itself. Trane’s own support pages cover each fault, and the first answer to most of them is the same: a reboot.
This page brings those answers together. They are for these three models only: Trane gives separate steps for its other thermostats, such as the XR724 and the Link.
Before you start
What to carry: a torch for the breaker panel, and a pen. Ten minutes.
Gas or electric? Either. Trane says the thermostat is usually on the same circuit as the furnace or air handler, which matters when you reboot it at the breaker.
Be at the thermostat. Trane says you cannot reboot it remotely, and some fixes, such as reconnecting WiFi after a router change, can only be done at the screen.
A numeric code is for the dealer. Trane says that if you see a numeric error code, shown as Error or Err and a number, contact your local HVAC dealer.
Reboot it
Reboot from the screen or the breaker
From the screen. Press Menu, select Settings, tap Reboot and press Yes. Trane says the reboot takes several minutes.
At the breaker. If the screen will not work, Trane says switch the thermostat’s circuit off for 20 to 30 seconds, then back on.
Your settings stay. Trane says rebooting will not remove the settings stored in the thermostat.
A blank or frozen screen
Power cycle, then calibrate
Blank, white or black. Trane says to make sure the system is not running, switch the thermostat’s breaker off for 20 to 30 seconds and back on. If the screen is still blank, have your dealer inspect the thermostat and its wiring.
Buttons that do not respond. Trane says the screen is out of calibration. Switch the breaker off for at least 10 seconds. As it reboots, a screen asks if you want to calibrate the touchscreen: press Start and follow the prompts.
A locked screen
Check Access Restrictions
What locks it. Trane says that with Access Restrictions set, the screen locks after 1 minute of inactivity. Low, Medium and High each allow less, and High lets nobody change anything.
Getting in. Trane says hold the Menu button for 5 seconds and the menu appears. The restriction comes back after a minute of inactivity unless you set it to None.
Changing it. Menu, Settings, Screen, then Access Restrictions. Choose the level and press Apply.
Offline, or no WiFi
Reconnect it
A red X over the green bars. Trane says the network must be secure, one that needs a password. Go to Menu, Settings, Network, Connect to WiFi Network, and enter the password exactly, because it is case sensitive.
Disconnected after a flicker. Trane says a brief power or WiFi drop can leave it disconnected. Turn Wireless off at Menu, Settings, Network, leave it off at least 30 seconds, and turn it on again. The system keeps running its setpoints and schedule meanwhile.
Dropping out often. Trane recommends a WiFi signal of 80 percent or more, and the router within about 30 feet. Check it at Menu, System Info, About, page 2 of 4.
A new router or password. Trane says it has to be entered again at the thermostat itself, not from the app.
Wrong readings and settings
Calibrate and check the fan
The temperature or humidity looks wrong. Trane says check it against a separate thermometer or humidity meter you trust, then adjust at Menu, Settings, Thermostat, Indoor Calibrations.
The fan will not run on On. Trane says that in cooling mode, with no cooling cycle running and the humidity above its setpoint, the fan may not run in On mode, to keep the humidity down.
Emergency heat. Trane says it only appears with a heat pump, and it is switched on in the Trane Home web portal under System Options. When to use it is a question for your dealer: aux heat and emergency heat.
An error code. Trane asks you to call your dealer, and recommends opting into Trane Diagnostics so the dealer can see the system. What the air handler’s own codes mean: Trane air handler codes.
Questions people ask
How do I reset my Trane thermostat?
Reboot it: Menu, Settings, Reboot, Yes, with the system idle. Or switch its breaker off for 20 to 30 seconds. Trane says a reboot keeps your settings.
Why is my Trane thermostat screen blank?
Power cycle it at the breaker for 20 to 30 seconds. If it stays blank, Trane says to have your dealer check the thermostat and its wiring.
How do I unlock my Trane thermostat?
Hold the Menu button for 5 seconds. To stop it locking, set Access Restrictions to None under Menu, Settings, Screen.
Why won’t my Trane thermostat connect to WiFi?
Trane lists an open network, a wrong or mistyped password, and a weak signal. It needs a secure network, the exact password, and 80 percent signal or better.
Can I reboot my Trane thermostat from the app?
No. Trane says you must be at the thermostat to reboot it.
What does an error code on my Trane thermostat mean?
A fault the dealer needs to look at. Trane says to contact your local HVAC dealer for any numeric code shown as Error or Err and a number.
