NTI Boiler Error Codes: LOC, ATT 7 and 101 Explained
NTI calls ATT 7 on its FTV a service reminder, while LOC needs the number beside it to identify the lockout. On FTVN Series II, 101 means the outlet temperature exceeded 210 degrees F. Trinity TFT and FTG use different charts, so keep the model, letters and number together.
NTI boiler error codes need the model name beside them: NTI calls ATT 7 on an FTV a service reminder, but 101 on an FTVN Series II means the outlet temperature exceeded 210 degrees F.
Start with the letters on the boiler, then the whole message. A number copied from a different NTI chart can send you looking for the wrong fault.
Before you start
What to carry: a torch, a phone or pen, and the paperwork supplied with the boiler. You can make the fault record without opening the cabinet.
Gas or electric? NTI’s manuals used here cover gas fired hot water boilers. This page covers FTV, FTVN Series II, Trinity TFT and FTG models, with a separate chart for each control family.
Renting? Send the fault record to the landlord or whoever arranges your heating repairs.
A smell of gas. NTI says not to light any appliance, touch electrical switches or use a phone inside. Leave and call the gas supplier from outside. Follow the gas supplier’s instructions; if you cannot reach the supplier, call the fire department.
A carbon monoxide alarm. CPSC says to move outside into fresh air and call 911 or the fire department. Count everyone to check that all are outside, and stay out until emergency responders allow you back. If a faulty appliance caused the alarm, do not use it until trained personnel have serviced it.
Overheating, or gas that will not shut off. NTI’s FTVN Series II manual says to close the manual gas control valve to the boiler. Do not try a power reset in that situation; NTI calls for a qualified service technician to check an overheated appliance before it runs again.
Leave the cabinet closed. NTI requires qualified people for service work. The internal checks described below explain the repair visit; they are not instructions to handle wiring, gas valves or safety switches. Its FTVN Series II manual also says not to use a boiler that has been under water until the required inspection and replacement work is done.
Match the model and the whole message
Make one useful fault record
Use an accessible model label or the boiler paperwork. Write down the full model, all letters and numbers on the display, any words beside them, and whether the fault appeared during room heating or hot water use.
These are the manuals behind the sections below. The extra N in FTVN matters.
| Boiler named in the manual | Chart used here |
|---|---|
| FTV110, FTV150, FTV190 and their C versions | June 2019 FTV manual: Loc, Err and Att messages |
| FTVN085, FTVN110, FTVN150, FTVN199 and 110C, 150C, 199C, Series II | FTVN Series II Rev. 10: the 101 section below |
| Trinity TFT models in the April 2025 manual | TFT hold and lockout chart |
| FTG600, 800, 1200, 1400, 2000, 2200 and 2400 | June 2024 FTG hold and lockout chart |
In these manuals, CH means central heating and DHW means domestic hot water. If your boiler has no code and simply keeps stopping, use boiler keeps turning off for that symptom.
FTV ATT 7 and the other ATT messages
Separate the service reminder from a fault
On the FTV models above, NTI says ATT 7 appears every 365 days as a service reminder. Arrange the service; the reminder itself does not name a failed component.
NTI clears it through setting 2-16, set to OFF, after servicing the boiler. That setting belongs to its Installer Menu, so leave it with the person doing the service.
The other FTV ATT messages in NTI’s table have different meanings:
| FTV display | What NTI’s chart describes |
|---|---|
| Att 2 | A short circuit at the outdoor sensor |
| Att 3 | An open circuit at the hot water tank sensor |
| Att 4 | A short circuit at the hot water tank sensor |
| Att 6 | Warm weather shutdown: outdoor temperature is above the configured threshold, so the boiler responds only to hot water demands |
For Att 3 or 4, NTI includes the hot water mode setting among the checks when no tank sensor is fitted. For Att 6 with an incorrect outdoor temperature reading, it directs the repairer to the outdoor sensor and its wiring. Those details matter before anyone orders a replacement sensor.
FTV LOC codes: use the number after LOC
Find what caused the lockout
NTI uses Loc to say the FTV is locked out. The number alongside it identifies the condition. Its selected FTV entries below describe what the control detected, rather than telling you which part to buy.
| FTV display | What NTI means |
|---|---|
| Loc 1 | Five unsuccessful ignition attempts in a row |
| Loc 2 to 4 | Gas valve electrical circuit fault; the chart also lists electrical interference |
| Loc 5 | Safety limit circuit fault; electrical interference is also listed |
| Loc 10 | An invalid supply / outlet temperature sensor reading |
| Loc 11 | A blocking error has continued for 20 hours |
| Loc 12 | Measured fan speed has not reached its target within 60 seconds |
| Loc 26 | An invalid flue temperature sensor reading |
| Loc 27 / 28 | A flame indication 10 seconds after the gas valve closes / before ignition, respectively |
| Loc 31 | Flame lost three times during one demand |
For Loc 1, NTI’s checks include vent blockage, condensate drainage, gas pressure, ignition components and flame sensing. Tell the repairer whether it never lit or lit and immediately went out; the manual separates those two cases.
For Loc 5, NTI includes an external safety device such as a low water cutoff and bad connections in the safety circuit. Do not bridge a switch to get the heat back.
NTI says FTV hard lockouts such as Loc 1 and 2 cannot be cleared by switching the power off and on. Its reset method is to press and hold RESET on the display. Have the cause addressed first, especially for a safety circuit or unexpected flame indication.
FTV ERR messages need the underlying fault cleared
NTI says an FTV blocking error appears as Err and prevents burner operation while the problem exists. Pressing RESET or cycling the power does not clear the underlying problem.
| FTV display | What NTI’s chart points to |
|---|---|
| Err 58 or 59 | A water pressure error |
| Err 60 | The flue temperature exceeded its limit |
| Err 61 | The inlet water temperature exceeded its limit |
| Err 72 / 73 | Supply temperature sensor open circuit / fault |
| Err 80 or 81 | A short circuit at the supply temperature sensor |
For Err 58 or 59, NTI’s chart also tells the technician to inspect the pressure sensor and cable if the external gauge is already above 15 psi. Compare the gauge with the display and report both readings, rather than assuming every pressure message calls for more water.
The guide to boiler pressure explains the gauge and pressure changes. Use the filling procedure for your own installation before adding water.
NTI error 101: the FTVN Series II meaning
Treat 101 as a temperature fault to investigate
In its FTVN Series II Rev. 10 chart, NTI prints 1 01 / 101 as outlet temperature exceeding 210 degrees F. The row is labelled Blocking (Manual Reset), so do not assume the word blocking means this particular code will clear itself.
NTI’s possible causes include air in the system, a plugged return filter, an internal pump that has failed or lost power, piping problems and faulty temperature sensors. The drawing shows why the investigation includes both water movement and temperature readings.
The same NTI row includes a tripped burner plate thermal switch. If that switch is open, the manual says not to operate the boiler and directs the technician to inspect the combustion chamber insulation. That is a reason to have 101 diagnosed before attempting a restart.
If you also have cold radiators, the boiler circulator pump guide explains that part of the system.
Trinity TFT and FTG codes use another chart
Keep the hold or lockout wording with the code
NTI’s April 2025 Trinity TFT manual and June 2024 FTG manual give the selected meanings below. These entries come from their hold and lockout charts, not their separate alert lists.
| TFT or FTG code | What NTI’s chart names |
|---|---|
| 61 | A delay between firing cycles |
| 62 | Fan speed not proved |
| 91 / 92 | Inlet / outlet temperature sensor fault |
| 95 | Flue, or stack, temperature sensor fault |
| 101 | Exchanger sensor fault, marked Disabled in these charts |
| 109 | Ignition failed |
| 110 | Ignition failure occurred |
In the FTG troubleshooting chart, NTI calls Hold 61 normal operation and says to let its timer expire. It also describes Hold 62 appearing briefly before ignition as normal; a message that stays while the heat fails needs investigation.
For FTG 109, NTI’s service checks include the igniter, vent, condensate drain, gas supply and flame sensor connection. The number does not establish that the igniter itself has failed.
Notice the Disabled note beside 101 in the TFT and FTG lists. Do not use that entry to order an exchanger sensor or apply it to the FTVN Series II temperature fault above. If the boiler and chart do not agree, send the full fault record to the service company.
After a reset or a repair
Check that the rooms warm and, on a system that also heats tap water, that hot water service returns. Keep the fault record if the message comes back.
NTI’s FTVN Series II manual calls for service when lockouts recur. It permits five reset presses in 15 minutes; a sixth attempt within that period locks the boiler out. Do not keep pressing RESET or use power cycling to work around that limit.
What each one takes
| Finding | What the work involves |
|---|---|
| FTV Att 7 | Scheduled servicing and clearing the reminder afterward |
| FTV sensor or pressure message | Comparing readings, testing wiring and sensors, or correcting the water condition |
| FTV ignition or safety lockout | A gas service technician finding the cause before restarting |
| FTVN Series II 101 | Checking circulation, temperature sensors and the burner plate safety circuit |
| FTG brief 61 or 62, followed by normal heating | Letting the normal operating sequence finish |
| TFT or FTG persistent fault | Diagnosis using that model’s service chart and fault history |
Questions people ask
What does Afro mean on an NTI FTV?
NTI calls Afro its frost protection indication. Its FTV controller can run the pumps and, at a lower water temperature, the burner as part of that protection.
Why does my FTV show dAir after the power comes back?
NTI says each FTV power up starts a 14 minute sequence that cycles the circulators to help remove air. During that sequence the burner does not attempt to fire. Let it finish.
What does FILL mean on the FTV?
NTI lists FILL as low water pressure. Its checks include the pressure sensor if the external gauge is already above 15 psi, so give the service company both readings. The pressure section above explains that distinction.
What if FTVN Series II code 101 happens only during hot water use?
NTI’s 101 chart directs the technician to check for a blockage in the combi plate heat exchanger, or in the indirect hot water tank and its plumbing, when the problem occurs only during hot water demands.
Can a technician see an error that has disappeared?
Yes. NTI says the FTV stores its most recent 16 lockouts and 16 blocking errors in Installer Menu history. On the FTG, the History button on the Summary page opens records of the most recent 15 lockouts and alerts.
