Utica Boiler Error Codes: STA 1, STA 8, 62 and 133
Utica's MGB Series II chart calls STA 1 idle or pump only operation and STA 8 running. Err 62 is a retry lockout on that control. Code 133 belongs to the MAC/MAH ignition fault chart below. Match the model and the letters before treating a number as a fault.
Utica boiler error codes need the letters and model beside them: Utica’s MGB Series II manual calls STA 1 idle or pump only operation and STA 8 running. Neither display, by itself, says a part has failed.
An Err message is a different matter. Start by finding your boiler in the sections below, then use its own chart. The MGB, UB95M, SSC and MAC/MAH controls do not share one code list.
Before you start
What to carry: a torch, a phone or pen, and the boiler paperwork. Keep the cabinet closed for these checks.
Gas or electric? Utica’s manuals used here cover gas fired hot water boilers. The MGB Series II is a cast iron boiler; the UB95M, SSC and MAC/MAH are condensing models. These are not electric boiler or oil burner charts.
Renting? Send the fault record to the landlord or whoever arranges the heating repairs.
Overheating, or gas that will not shut off. Utica’s UB95M user manual says to leave the pump’s electrical supply on and shut off the gas at a valve outside the appliance. Do not try a power reset in that situation.
A smell of gas. Utica says not to light an appliance, touch an electrical switch or use a phone inside. Leave and call the gas supplier from outside. Follow its instructions; if you cannot reach it, call the fire department.
A carbon monoxide alarm. CPSC says to move outside into fresh air and call 911 or the fire department. Count everyone and stay out until emergency responders allow you back. If a faulty appliance caused the alarm, do not use it until trained personnel have serviced it.
Internal repairs need a qualified service technician. Utica reserves the UB95M control guide for qualified installers and technicians. The checks below explain what the technician will investigate. Leave gas valves, wiring and safety switches to them. Utica’s UB95M user manual says not to use the boiler if any part has been under water. Immediately call a qualified service technician to inspect it and replace any control system parts and gas controls that were submerged.
Match the model, prefix and number
Make one complete fault record
Use an accessible model label or the paperwork. Write down the full model, the letters and number, any accompanying words, and whether the house is getting heat. If the display alternates, capture both parts.
The MGB tables here cover MGB-75J, 100J, 125J, 150J, 170J and 200J with the integrated control described in Utica’s December 2013 Rev. D manual. They are not a chart for every MGB control revision.
Utica’s MGB display key identifies StA as Current State and Err as Error Code. The UB95M-200 uses an alternating 9/b display for soft lockouts and a flashing E with a number for hard lockouts.
MGB Series II STA 1 and STA 8
See whether the operating state fits the heating demand
In Utica’s MGB Table 6, state 1 has two entries: standby with no call for heat, or a heat request with water already hot enough to run only the circulator. A quiet burner can therefore fit either situation.
Look at the room thermostat: is the room already at the temperature you requested, or is it cold and asking for heat? Report that alongside STA 1. Do not raise the boiler’s water temperature setting just to make the burner light.
For STA 8, Utica says the system is running and a flame signal must be present. If that state appears but the rooms stay cold, the useful next question is where the heat stops reaching them. The boiler circulator pump guide covers that symptom.
Utica lists these other MGB operating states in the same table:
| MGB state | What Utica describes |
|---|---|
| StA 4 | Purging before the ignition trial |
| StA 6 / 7 | Sparking / establishing a stable flame signal |
| StA 9 | Purging at the end of a heat call |
| StA 10 | A delay after unsuccessful ignition or a lost flame signal |
| StA 13 / 14 | Soft lockout / hard lockout |
| StA 15 | Waiting for an open limit switch to close |
MGB error 62 and the other Err messages
Separate a retry lockout from a normal wait
Utica calls MGB Err 62 a soft lockout after the maximum number of retries. Its table says it resets after one hour if the alarm’s cause disappears. That explains the wait, but not what prevented ignition.
For ignition trouble, Utica’s MGB procedure checks the ignition cable, connections, grounding and spark circuit. Those are service checks. A retry code alone is not a reason to order a gas valve or ignition control.
The selected entries below are from Utica’s MGB Table 7, Troubleshooting Error Codes. Keep them separate from the StA table above.
| MGB error | What Utica’s control detected |
|---|---|
| Err 4 | Low flame current, listed as a noncritical alarm |
| Err 6 / 23 | Flame outside the normal sequence / flame during prepurge |
| Err 32 | The temperature sensor in the well is not reading correctly |
| Err 55 / 56 | The vent damper end switch failed to close / failed to open |
| Err 57 / 58 | The igniter flame rod is shorted to burner ground |
| Err 63 | The maximum number of recycles was exceeded |
| Err 64 | The control’s self checks detected an electronics failure |
| Err 65 | The sensor measured a temperature above the allowed limit |
UB95M-200: E02 and the alternating 9/b display
Keep the lockout type with the UB95M number
Utica’s UB95M Rev. F guide says a soft lockout alternates 9 and b, and the boiler can start again when the condition clears or times out. A hard lockout flashes E and needs a manual reset after the technician corrects its cause.
For E02, Utica’s troubleshooting table describes ignition failing through five attempts. It splits the investigation into no spark, spark without flame, and a flame with a low signal. Each branch leads to different tests.
These selected UB95M entries come from Utica’s Rev. F control guide:
| UB95M display | What Utica means |
|---|---|
| 9/b with 24 | Return water temperature is higher than supply temperature |
| 9/b with 25 | Outlet water temperature rose too quickly |
| E03 | Gas valve disconnected |
| E04 | Power was lost after a lockout |
| E28 | No blower signal; the blower is not running or its motor is defective |
| E31 / E32 | Outlet / return temperature sensor short circuit |
| E36 / E37 | Outlet / return temperature sensor open circuit |
For E04, Utica says the control still needs a manual reset after power loss, but the earlier error information is lost. Cutting power can therefore leave the repairer with less to work from.
SSC: A alarms and E blocking errors
Utica’s SSC Rev. G manual covers UBSSC-050, 075, 100, 150, 200 and 299. Its screen examples distinguish Lockout Alarm A messages from Blocking Error E messages. Selected entries from that chart are below.
| SSC display | What Utica’s chart describes |
|---|---|
| A01: Ignit Error | Three unsuccessful ignition attempts in a row |
| A06: Safety Relay Error | The safety circuit is open |
| A08: Fan Error | Blower speed does not reach the speed calculated by the control |
| A24: 3 Flame Failures | Flame signal lost three times during one heat call |
| E36: Low Water Cutoff | The low water cutoff sees no water |
| E39 / E40 | The flue / return water sensor reads above 200 degrees F |
For SSC E66, Utica says the reset button was pressed too many times and the error clears in one to two minutes. Let that timer finish; it does not explain or repair the fault that prompted the resets.
Utica error 133: the MAC/MAH meaning
Have the ignition failure traced to its cause
Utica’s September 2022 MAC/MAH installation manual calls 133 ignition failure. This section covers MAH-75, 100, 125 and 165 heating boilers and MAC-115, 150 and 205 combi boilers in that manual package.
Its 133 row directs the technician to the condensate trap, sensing electrode, spark electrode and cable, flue recirculation, grounding, gas orifice and gas pressure. It also includes calibration if necessary. The fault is wider than just a dirty flame sensor.
Utica’s accompanying application guide describes E133 as interruption of gas supply or flame failure. It says that an ineffective reset, or errors that recur regularly, need further investigation. Leave calibration and gas adjustments to the repairer rather than trying to clear 133 through installer settings.
What you can check without opening the boiler
For the UB95M, Utica’s user manual asks owners to keep combustion air and flue paths unobstructed. Utica also tells UB95M owners to check that the boiler area is free of combustible materials, gasoline and other flammable vapors and liquids. From the ground, look at any visible outside openings and report snow, debris or damage. Do not climb or take vent joints apart. Utica says signs of vent or air intake deterioration or leakage need immediate attention from a qualified service agency.
The same manual says to contact a qualified service agency immediately if the visible condensate drain shows blockage, leakage or deterioration. Look for those signs without disconnecting it. This observation can help the repairer, but it does not establish the cause of an ignition fault.
After the repair, check that the rooms warm and the fault stays cleared. If the display looks normal but the heat still fails, use boiler not working to describe the remaining symptom.
What each one takes
| Finding | What the work involves |
|---|---|
| MGB normal state with the house warm | No part replacement for the state display alone |
| MGB retry or recycle lockout | Testing ignition and flame sensing |
| MGB damper or sensor error | Checking the named circuit before choosing a replacement |
| UB95M hard lockout | Correcting the fault and then resetting the control |
| MAC/MAH ignition fault | Checking fuel, ignition, venting and condensate drainage |
Questions people ask
Is MGB StA 18 the same as Err 18?
No. Utica calls StA 18 waiting for the damper to open. Err 18 describes welded gas valve relays and five consecutive soft lockouts, and is listed as a hard lockout. The prefix changes the meaning completely.
Does MGB Err 32 mean I need a new sensor?
Not from the number alone. Utica first directs the repairer to verify that the temperature sensor is connected to the board, then replace it if necessary.
What does UB95M b25 have to do with the pump?
Utica’s b25 chart points to low water flow. Its checks include trapped air, piping and circulator operation. Tell the service company whether all rooms are cold or only one part of the house.
Can the UB95M frost protection keep all my pipes safe?
No. Utica says that control feature gives some protection to the boiler only, not the whole heating system, and does not eliminate the possibility of freezing. Arrange protection for the house if heat will be unavailable during freezing weather.
What if my Utica model or code is not here?
These are selected entries, not a complete list for every Utica appliance. Send your fault record to the service company when the model or message does not match.
