White-Rodgers 49S25 AC and Heat Pump Control Codes
Short answer

The White-Rodgers 49S25 is a two stage control for the outdoor unit of an air conditioner or heat pump, with a two character display. On is standby, C1 and C2 are cooling, P1 and P2 heat pump heating and dF defrost. 01 and 02 are the low and high pressure switches, 03 short cycling, 04 a locked rotor, 08 no line voltage and b0 no indoor airflow. L1 and L2 are lockouts after three trips.

The White-Rodgers 49S25-707 is the control board in the outdoor unit of a two stage air conditioner or heat pump, up to 5 tons with a single phase compressor. It works in a fully communicating system over four wires, or with ordinary 24 volt thermostat wiring. A two character display on the board shows what it is doing, and what went wrong.

Everything on this page comes from White-Rodgers’ own installation instructions for the 49S25-707, published by Copeland, which now owns the brand. Several of its codes share names with Copeland’s Comfort Alert codes, and that page is linked where it helps.

Before you start

What to carry: a torch and a pen. Ten minutes.

Gas or electric? Electric. The outdoor unit runs on 240 volts, and the board’s display sits inside its control box.

Read, do not reach. The display is on a live board. Read it and write it down, and leave anything inside the box to a technician.

No display at all. White-Rodgers says a blank display means no power. Check the breaker and the outdoor disconnect first.

Where you stop. Risk of electric shock. White-Rodgers says to disconnect power before any work on the control. The TEST button runs the compressor and fan for a five second check, so it is a technician’s tool.

Lockouts L1 and L2. The low or high pressure switch tripped three times. A technician needs to find out why before anyone clears it.

Compressor codes 04 to 07. A locked rotor or an open circuit in the compressor is a service call.

Status codes: the normal ones

THE NORMAL CODES 88 power up On standby C1 C1, C2: cooling P1 P1, P2: heating P3 C3, P3: short cycle timer, the compressor waits dF defrost; dt is a defrost that ran to its limit
What the 49S25 shows when all is well. C3 and P3 are the short cycle timer holding the compressor off, which is normal.

Read the status

88 and On. 88 at power up, then On for standby.

C1 and C2. Low and high stage cooling.

P1 and P2. Low and high stage heating, on a heat pump.

C3 and P3. The short cycle timer in cool or heat mode. The compressor is being held off for a while after it last stopped. Wait.

dF and dE. Defrost, and a defrost forced by a technician. dt means the defrost hit its maximum time.

Ft and Pd. Field test mode and pump down, both started by a technician.

Its timings. White-Rodgers lists a minimum run time of 30 seconds, a defrost of at most 10 minutes, and 5 seconds between first and second stage.

The fault codes

Code What White-Rodgers says
01 Low pressure cut out trip, low side fault
02 High pressure cut out trip, high side fault

06 Open start circuit
07 Open run circuit
08 No line voltage
09 Low pilot voltage
L1, L2 Low or high pressure lockout, three trips
L6, L7 Open start or open run circuit lockout
L8, H8 Low line voltage, high line voltage
P0 Compressor protector open
A2, A3 Outdoor air sensor fault, outdoor coil sensor fault
b0, b9 No indoor airflow, low indoor airflow

Check 2

Work the owner checks

08: no line voltage. The board has lost its 240 volt supply. Check the breaker and the disconnect by the outdoor unit: why the outside unit is not running.

b0 and b9: indoor airflow. No airflow or low airflow from the indoor unit. Check the filter and that the registers are open: why no air comes from the vents.

L8 and H8: the supply voltage. Low or high line voltage. If it happens in storms or at peak times, tell the technician or the utility.

03 to 07: the compressor codes. They carry the same names as Copeland’s Comfort Alert codes, so that page explains them further: the Comfort Alert codes.

Recalling and clearing the codes

Check 3Free, five minutes

Use the RECALL button

Recall. In standby, with no call for heat or cooling, press RECALL for about two to five seconds. White-Rodgers says the stored codes play back, and the control ignores any new call while it shows them.

Repeats. A fault that happened several times in a row is shown at most three times.

Clear. In standby, press RECALL for five to ten seconds, until the light flashes rapidly. Held past ten seconds, the rapid flash stops and the display returns to normal.

Forced defrost and pump down. Button combinations for a technician, with a call for heat or on communicating systems only.

Questions people ask

What does 02 mean on a White-Rodgers 49S25?

A high pressure cut out trip, a high side fault. Three trips become the L2 lockout. It needs a technician to find the cause.

What does P3 or C3 mean?

The short cycle timer is holding the compressor off after it last stopped, in heat or cool mode. It is a normal delay. Wait and it clears.

What does b0 mean?

No indoor airflow. Check the indoor filter and blower first, then the registers.

What does dF mean?

Defrost. The heat pump is melting ice off its outdoor coil. dt means a defrost ran to its maximum time.

What does 08 mean?

No line voltage. Check the breaker and the outdoor disconnect.

How do I clear the codes?

In standby, hold RECALL for five to ten seconds until the light flashes rapidly, then let go.
